International Yoga Day was celebrated today June 21st, in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, with Yoga Programs being organised at several places. Delhi Jal Board Vice Chairman and Malviya Nagar MLA Shri Somnath Bharti participated in these yoga programmes, along with RWA representatives, local residents and children. The importance of yoga was explained to the people through yoga exercises. Shi Bharti appealed to people to give Yoga a place in their daily routine to lead a healthy life.

People in the Malaviya Nagar assembly constituency marked International Yoga Day with fervour, engaging in yoga exercises at Vijay Mandal Park, D Block Gulmohar Park, and Central Park Sarvodaya Enclave. Shri Somnath Bharti, accompanied by the local residents, joined in the early morning yoga session, demonstrating various asanas. Participants included a diverse group comprising senior citizens, women, and children, who actively embraced the spirit of yoga with great enthusiasm.

Somnath Bharti praised the yoga trainers present on the occasion. He stated, “People should make yoga a part of their daily routine to live a healthy life. Along with the body, yoga makes the mind healthy as well. It is necessary to keep the mind healthy as much as it is necessary to keep the body healthy.”

Shri Bharti further spoke about the Delhi Government’s initiative to popularise Yoga through the provision of free yoga classes under the Dilli ki Yogshala program. This programme was started two years ago, until it was stopped due to the decision of the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi to stop funds for the Yogshala. The locals participating in the Yoga session with Shri Bharti demanded the restart of this initiative of providing free yoga classes by the Delhi Government. Delhi Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal further tweeted about this issue stating, “Two years ago the Delhi government started free yoga classes for the people of Delhi. About 17,000 people started doing yoga in these every day. Last year he got these yoga classes stopped. People became very sad. Who benefits from this? Should public welfare programs like this be stopped? Yoga day for me will be the day when I will again start free yoga classes for my Delhiites.”

Shri Bharti concluded by speaking of the benefits of Yoga and said, “Yoga is a means of cultivating the mind and body. If you cannot control your mind, then it is difficult for you to control your body. One can win the universe by controlling his mind. A healthy body and a healthy mind ultimately lead to a healthy society. This will also help save the precious funds that are being spent by the government on health services.”
