Urdu Academy to coach IAS aspirants in Urdu subjects; a step towards making Urdu a means to develop careers of youth

– Study material of subjects available in English and Hindi should be prepared in Urdu also: Dy CM Manish Sisodia

Deputy chief minister and minister for art, culture and languages Shri Manish Sisodia interacted with toppers in the Urdu subject hailing from various universities from across Delhi on Monday evening. The event organised by Urdu Academy, Delhi, hosted toppers of universities, boards excelling in Urdu language and were were felicitated by the Deputy CM Shri Sisodia.

In a candid conversation with the toppers present in the felicitation ceremony, he spoke about the vitality of Urdu as a subject and its career prospects in various domains. There was a general concern around students not preferring Urdu as their medium due to the lack of study material provided in the language, in their respective colleges. Another concern around Urdu not being a favoured stream of study amongst students and scholars alike was the collective perception that it’s not a job-oriented stream.

A number of aspirants of Urdu subject commented on the diminishing importance of the subject in the career domain. A renowned professor of Economics informed that he had studied Urdu till class 10th but then changed his stream to Economics. Another student who had bagged gold medal in B.A. Hons in Urdu from Jamia Millia Islamia also claimed that she switched her stream to Sociology out of peer pressure.

“Urdu Academy should start providing coaching to interested students,” said Deputy CM Shri Sisodia. “Study material in Urdu will soon be accessible to students who want to write their papers in the medium. In the way English and Hindi are treated as the standard language of teaching and study, Urdu language will also be treated at par with them.”

Dignitaries from the Delhi government along with the Vice chairman of Urdu Academy Prof Shehpar Rasool also graced the felicitation ceremony.

Students excelling in the field of Urdu were awarded at the event. They represented Jamia Millia Islamia, Jawahar Lal Nehru, District Institute of Education and Training and Maharishi Valmiki College of Education.
