Defying defections and political maneuvering, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) delivered a strong performance in Monday’s MCD Ward Committee elections, securing control over four key zones in Delhi. AAP won both Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson posts in the City SP, Karol Bagh, and West Zone, and clinched the Chairperson post in Rohini Zone.
AAP also won the Standing Committee member seat in City SP Zone. In a show of unity, AAP councillors held firm—while two BJP votes swung in AAP’s favour. Leader of Opposition (LoP) in MCD House Ankush Narang, along with MCD Sah-Prabhabri Praveen Kumar, Matia Mahal MLA Aaley Mohammad Iqbal, and Chandni Chowk MLA Punardeep Singh Sawhney ‘Sabby’ were present.
On this, AAP Delhi State President Saurabh Bharadwaj wrote on ‘X’, “Aam Aadmi Party has secured victories in the West Zone, City Sadar Zone, Karol Bagh Zone, and Rohini Zone of the MCD. Despite 15 councillors leaving the party to form a new faction with BJP’s support, we have managed to retain control over 4 out of 5 zones. I am very proud to share that those who abandoned their AAP to form a new faction and openly received BJP’s backing in the zonal elections have failed to win a single zone,” he posted.
On Monday, elections were held for the posts of Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of Ward Committees across 12 MCD zones. The elections took place at the Civic Centre, where the Aam Aadmi Party fielded candidates for these posts in the respective zones. In zones where AAP had a majority, the party put in its full strength to secure victory.
Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the MCD House, Ankush Narang, shared that in the City-SP Zone, Vikas Tank won the post of Ward Committee Chairperson while Pooja was elected Vice-Chairperson, hoisting the party’s flag. Additionally, Rafia Mahir won the election for the Standing Committee member post from this zone.
Similarly, in Karol Bagh Zone, AAP’s Puneet Rai was elected Ward Committee Chairperson and Kavita Chauhan as Vice-Chairperson. In the West Zone, Nirmala Kumari got elected as Chairperson and Sahil Gangwal as Vice-Chairperson. In Rohini Zone, Amrit Jain secured victory for the position of Ward Committee Chairperson.
Ankush Narang congratulated and extended best wishes to all AAP candidates who were elected as Ward Committee Chairpersons, Vice-Chairpersons, and members. He said, “This is a collective victory of all Aam Aadmi Party councillors. The AAP has always fought to safeguard public interest and will continue to do so. Just as in the Delhi Assembly, the Aam Aadmi Party will play the role of a strong opposition in the MCD House as well, and it will raise every concern of the people from the House to the streets.”
