Delhi is reeling under a severe water crisis, and public outrage is erupting on the streets. As water supply remains grossly inadequate, women have launched a wave of symbolic protests by smashing ‘Matka(s)’. The protest continued on Thursday in Ghonda Vidhan Sabha, where women staged a powerful protest under the leadership of AAP Delhi Women’s Wing President Sarika Chaudhary.
Slogans against CM Rekha Gupta rang out as women expressed their fury. The message was clear — when there’s no water to store, the matka itself becomes a symbol of betrayal. Had Arvind Kejriwal’s government been in power, Delhi wouldn’t be facing such a crisis, and women wouldn’t be forced to take to the streets.
During a protest held on Thursday in the Ghonda-Brahmpuri ward over the acute water shortage, AAP Councillor from Brahmpuri, Chhaya Gaurav Sharma, said, “We had raised the key issues of the people, but today those very people are being deprived of basic necessities like water and electricity. If the people had voted for Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party, this would not have been the situation. The electricity situation in Delhi is going from bad to worse. In my ward, there was no electricity for 24 hours. Small children, the elderly, and women are all suffering due to these outages.”
She continued, “People came to me with complaints that there was no electricity for 24 hours. But the local MLA is enjoying himself while the public is in distress. At the Yamuna Khadar ground, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had guaranteed that women would receive Rs 2,500 in the very first cabinet meeting. But these poor women have not received Rs 2,500, not even Rs 25. Earlier, electricity used to be available 24 hours a day — now it has been completely cut. BJP’s guarantee has proven to be hollow.”
She raised serious concerns about water quality, fee hikes in schools, and BJP’s false promises. She said, “The drinking water in my area is so filthy that it’s worse than sewage. Sewage water is overflowing onto the streets. School fees have been hiked by 30 percent, and children are being forced to drop out. What kind of guarantee was this that PM Modi gave?”
“Even with a four-engine, five-engine government, the people are suffering. The BJP should be ashamed. They should step aside and give the people of Delhi a chance to bring back their old Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. AAP has always worked for the welfare of the people, while the BJP made grand promises and ended up deceiving the public,” added the AAP Councillor.
Chhaya Gaurav Sharma further said, “The BJP had said, ‘Jahan jhuggi, wahan makaan,’ but now jhuggis are being demolished. The jhuggis in Sarojini Nagar have been torn down. Is this what BJP sent its MLAs to spend nights in jhuggis for? It was just a way to fool people. I want to ask Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Prime Minister Modi — what kind of shock-party is this? They make tall promises to get votes but disappear when it’s time to deliver basic services. The Aam Aadmi Party has always worked in the interest of the people, while the BJP has only lied.”
Meanwhile, during the protest, women said, “In Hinduism, providing water is considered a sacred deed, but under the BJP government, even this act of virtue is not happening. Water has been snatched from the people. PM Modi speaks of Hindu values, but taking water from the thirsty is the greatest sin. God has given him such a big opportunity, yet he cannot provide even basic amenities like water to the people. He promised Rs 2,500, but that too has not been fulfilled. We don’t want money or anything else now — we just want water.”
Women questioned BJP’s governance despite ruling both Delhi and Haryana. They said, “The people of Delhi are yearning for water — and this is happening even when the BJP is in power in Haryana too. So why is water not reaching us? Such a situation never existed under AAP’s governance. The water crisis in Delhi is so severe that stinking water is coming through the tanks.”
“We complained about it, but no one paid any heed. Children and women are falling sick. We request Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to come to Ghonda and see how women and children are desperate for water. If the BJP government cannot provide even a basic necessity like water, then it should resign. Arvind Kejriwal of the Aam Aadmi Party always prioritised the people’s problems,” they added.
