The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) tore into the BJP on Thursday after the Committee of Privileges of the 8th Delhi Legislative Assembly convened a sitting on the so called ‘Faansi Ghar’ row and issued yet another notice to former CM Arvind Kejriwal, former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, former Speaker Ram Niwas Goel and former Deputy Speaker Rakhi Birla.
Calling the move legally untenable and politically motivated, AAP said the Committee of Privileges of the 8th Assembly cannot act on matters from the previous term as affirmed by the Supreme Court, yet the BJP is fixated on such theatrics even as Delhi chokes on hazardous pollution, struggles with collapsing public services and reels from glaring security failures.
In a statement, the AAP asserted that the ‘Faansi Ghar’ row initiated by the ‘Committee of Privileges’ by the 8th Legislative Assembly of Delhi is entirely illegal. The party noted that the incident referenced in the Privilege Committee Communication (PCC) occurred in August 2022 during the tenure of the 7th Legislative Assembly of Delhi. That Assembly was dissolved in February 2025. Despite this, on 09.09.2025, the Privilege Committee of the 8th Legislative Assembly issued a PCC on an event that took place during the life of the earlier Assembly.
The AAP emphasised that once the 7th Legislative Assembly was dissolved, its privileges and proceedings could not be carried forward by the next Assembly. The party stated that the 8th Legislative Assembly of Delhi cannot initiate privilege action for actions of members in the 7th Legislative Assembly. The party cited the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s judgment in Amarinder Singh v. Punjab Vidhan Sabha (2010) and added that this makes the Privilege Committee’s action politically motivated and legally unsustainable.
The AAP pointed out, “While Delhi is facing serious challenges, the BJP is misusing a legislative mechanism for political vendetta instead of prioritising governance. Citizens are being forced to protest simply for clean air. Pollution levels are extremely high and people are finding it difficult to breathe. Instead of addressing this public health emergency by convening Assembly meetings to tackle the crisis, the BJP government is busy politicising the Committee of Privileges. The BJP’s four engine government is shutting down Mohalla Clinics at a time when pollution related illnesses and seasonal flu cases are rising. The closure of primary healthcare facilities during peak pollution season reflects administrative negligence.
At the same time, several areas of the city are facing water shortages, adding to the daily hardships of residents already dealing with severe environmental stress. The AAP highlighted the recent blast near Red Fort as an example of total intelligence failure and deteriorating law and order. “When such issues demand immediate attention, the BJP is focusing on politicising the Privilege Committee,” the party asserted.
The AAP noted that the Legislative Assembly of Delhi represents the aspirations of the people and the Committee of Privileges is responsible for preserving institutional integrity. The people of Delhi deserve better living conditions, better amenities and governance that serves their welfare rather than creating political distractions.
The AAP concluded that the 8th Legislative Assembly of Delhi and its Privilege Committee have more urgent responsibilities towards the people. In the interest of Delhi’s citizens, this BJP government must end this misadventure which is a vendetta driven distraction strategy that will fail both in a court of law and in the court of the people.
