In a decisive step towards transforming Punjab’s urban landscape, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has upgraded Mohali’s 10 MGD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) to 15 MGD, ensuring full sewage connectivity for the city. Dedicating the upgraded facility to the people of Punjab on Monday, AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann declared this as the beginning of a state-wide mission to modernise all cities.
The AAP Supremo announced that by December, the government will begin mission-mode work across 166 towns to revamp drinking water systems, sewage networks, cleanliness infrastructure, roads, streetlights, and Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs)—marking a bold push to make Punjab’s cities clean, efficient, and future-ready.

Arvind Kejriwal said, “It is a matter of great pride that today, a 15 MGD capacity Sewage Treatment Plant is being inaugurated in Sector 83, Mohali. Under the leadership of CM Bhagwant Mann, the AAP government has upgraded this critical infrastructure to serve Mohali more efficiently. In the coming months, we will revamp Punjab’s urban landscape in mission mode. Starting December, the state government will launch a comprehensive initiative across 166 cities to ensure reliable water supply, sewage systems, sanitation, road maintenance, street lighting, and sewage treatment infrastructure.”
Arvind Kejriwal added that alongside the upgraded 15 MGD plant, Punjab’s first-ever Ultra-Filtration Tertiary Treatment Plant of 5 MGD capacity has also been commissioned at the site. “The purified water will be reused for irrigation, road-cleaning, toilet flushing, and other non-potable purposes. This will significantly reduce dependence on fresh water, thereby conserving groundwater,” he stated.
Meanwhile, CM Bhagwant Mann emphasised the environmental impact of the initiative and announced that the modern technology used in this project would soon be replicated across the state. “The goal is to conserve Punjab’s precious water resources. Just like Singapore uses micro-filtration to make rainwater potable, Punjab too must adopt advanced solutions to safeguard its future. Traditional parties ignored these issues because the environment doesn’t vote. That negligence led to pollution and irreversible damage to our natural resources.”
Bhagwant Mann underlined that since AAP formed the government in Punjab, several bold steps have been taken to protect the environment, rejuvenate canal systems, and secure the well-being of society. “We are committed to implementing the best technologies to ensure water conservation for future generations. Prevention is better than cure — this principle now guides our environmental action.”

Calling upon people to support the state’s green mission, the Punjab CM said, “Guru Sahib taught us that air is the Guru, water is the Father, and earth is the Mother. The time has come to act on these teachings. We must pledge to restore Punjab’s lost glory by embracing the wisdom of Gurbani and planting more trees.”
He further lauded Arvind Kejriwal’s guidance, saying, “Punjab is benefiting immensely from Kejriwal’s expertise and Delhi’s successful models.” He congratulated the officials involved in the project, calling it a milestone in building a progressive Punjab.
