In a powerful show of anger against the BJP government’s failure, women in Mundka took to the streets, demonstrating by breaking ‘Matka(s)’. Reeling under severe water shortage and hours-long power cuts, they sent a clear message—enough is enough, they will fight for what is rightfully theirs. Led by AAP Delhi State Women’s Wing President Sarika Chaudhary, the demonstration saw hundreds of local women join in, warning the BJP that if basic needs are not met, the streets will become their battleground.
Women at the Matka Phod demonstration exposed water crisis in unauthorised colonies. “Where leaders like Rekha Gupta live in posh areas like Shalimar Bagh and Rohini, there is no shortage of water. But in the unauthorised colonies of Mundka, people are struggling for every drop,” the women said.
They questioned whether the residents of these colonies did not vote or whether their votes did not contribute to Rekha Gupta’s victory. “Why then are our problems being ignored? None of the promises made by Rekha Gupta have been fulfilled. There are power cuts, there is no water, and whatever little water comes is dirty and foul-smelling.”
They highlighted how women and children are worst affected. “During the summer, it is women and children who suffer the most due to water scarcity,” the women said. They added, “When you walk through the lanes, you see people longing for water. Tankers have been stopped, and even piped supply has dried up. The pipes through which water used to come have been removed.”
They further added, “Sewage water is overflowing into the colonies, making life more difficult. Yet, residents are getting water bills of Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000. When no water is being supplied, what exactly are we being billed for?”
Demanding accountability from CM Rekha Gupta, the women said that she must answer why water is available in posh areas but not a single drop reaches the unauthorised colonies. They called out the BJP government for neglecting the poor and marginalised.
They added, “In historic villages like Mundka, there is water all around, yet not a drop of clean drinking water is available. Despite the BJP having control over the municipal corporation, the MLA, the Mayor and the Delhi government, the problems of water and electricity in the colonies remain completely unresolved.
They criticised the BJP government’s first 100 days, stating, “100 days of the BJP government have passed, and in these 100 days, Delhi has been ruined. There are daily power cuts of four hours. Under Arvind Kejriwal’s government, people had forgotten what inverters were. But now, generator shops are back in business.”
They added, “Mohalla Clinics are being shut down. Free bus travel for women is being rolled back. Even the BJP’s promise of giving Rs 2,500 has not been fulfilled.”
They also raised issues of sanitation and basic civic failure. “At the first sign of rain, water starts collecting in the colonies because drains are not cleaned, garbage is not collected, and sanitation workers don’t come on time,” the women said. “Frequent power cuts and water shortages have made life unbearable.”
They warned, “If BJP does not meet the people’s demands, the public will once again bring back Arvind Kejriwal’s government — because only he can take care of Delhi and serve the people. The BJP government has devastated Delhi. Water pots lie empty while people are burdened under heavy bills. Power cuts and dirty water have become routine. Tankers are shut, and piped water comes just once or twice a week.”
They called out the BJP for breaking promises and cheating the public. “For women and children, whether it’s education, health or basic services — the Arvind Kejriwal government has been the best. The BJP has disappointed people on every front.”
