The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has strongly condemned BJP Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh’s decision to cancel elections for Special and Ad-hoc Committees in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). House’s Leader of Opposition (LoP) Ankush Narang called out the Mayor for being “hungry for power” and deliberately sabotaging the committee formation to retain total control.
The MCD House LoP said nominations were open till July 3, yet the elections were abruptly scrapped on July 2. He further emphasised that BJP blocked committee formations even during AAP’s government and is now repeating the same obstruction, proving it has no intention of serving Delhi’s people.
Senior AAP leader and MCD LoP Ankush Narang stated, “The last date for nominations to MCD’s Special and Ad-hoc Committees was July 3, 2025, but on July 2, Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh issued a notification through letter number 358/MS/MCD/2025, cancelling the nominations until a new election date is announced.”
He further said, “The BJP has neither allowed the MCD House to function nor let the committees be formed. Ever since they came to power, they have played a negative role. They haven’t let the House run, haven’t let the voice of Delhi’s people be raised, and haven’t allowed any decisions to be taken. Today again, when the notification for the formation of Special and Ad-hoc Committees was released, Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh himself issued a letter and got the formation cancelled. It is shameful that the Mayor has once again blocked the formation of these committees.”
Ankush Narang asserted, “Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh only wants to hold power in his own hands and does not want to give rights to anyone else. According to sources, there is resentment within the BJP itself because Raja Iqbal Singh wants to keep all powers centralized. Everyone is opposing this and demanding that committee formations should be transparent. Moreover, Raja Iqbal Singh should not be made chairman of any committee in the future. The Mayor is under immense pressure due to this discontent.”
The MCD House LoP added, “When the elections for the Standing Committee members were to be held, the High Court ordered that the elections must take place. But even then, BJP created hurdles. For the first time in history, municipal councillors sat through the entire night, waiting for the Standing Committee election to happen — but it never did. For two and a half years, the BJP did not allow the Standing Committee to be formed.”
Ankush Narang stated, “When the AAP came into the opposition, it played a constructive role. AAP ensured every step of the process was conducted properly and got the Standing Committee constituted. In contrast, BJP has always acted as a destructive opposition — they didn’t allow the work of Delhi’s people to move forward, nor let the House function.”
He said, “BJP never wants any work to be done in the interest of Delhi’s citizens. They don’t want the committees to be formed. Within the BJP, it is only one person — Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh — who wants to concentrate all powers in his own hands.
“This is injustice to the people of Delhi. When the Mayor’s election was to be held, BJP tried to block it as well. They broke microphones. The current CM Rekha Gupta was a municipal councillor at the time, and as a councillor, she was seen breaking the mic herself. She openly said the Mayor’s election would not happen. This is how they disrupted the election for Delhi’s Mayor and created massive chaos,” concluded Ankush Narang.
