The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has issued a stark warning to Delhi residents about skyrocketing electricity connection charges imposed by the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh, signaling similar threats if BJP gains control in the capital.
Senior AAP leader Jasmine Shah revealed that BJP’s Lieutenant Governor pressured Delhi’s power companies to raise rates, but Arvind Kejriwal stood firm, blocking any increases. “Kejriwal is the only leader in the country who has delivered the miracle of free, 24×7 electricity,” Jasmine Shah emphasized, cautioning that if BJP takes over, Delhi could face massive price hikes like in BJP-ruled states.
Senior AAP leader Jasmine Shah, in a press conference at the party headquarters on Friday, said that since 2014, when the Modi government came to power, the BJP has launched a campaign of only one governance scheme across the country which is to cut the pockets of the poor and fill the pockets of the rich. Every scheme and every work of the BJP has only looted the pockets of the poor, but the rich have not been allowed to suffer.
The senior AAP leader continued, “In the last 10 years, the BJP government at the centre has waived off the debt of Rs 15 lakh crore of big capitalists. This is the first time in the history of the country that in just ten years of rule, a central government has waived off the debt of Rs 15 lakh crore of capitalists. When the poor and common people of the country asked the government to do something for them too, the BJP increased the prices of the things used in their daily life. The prices of petrol and diesel, which used to be around Rs 60, have today increased to over Rs 100.”
Jasmine Shah further said that in 2014 the price of an LPG cylinder was around Rs 400, during PM Modi’s tenure its price has crossed Rs 1,200. When the Lok Sabha elections came, they reduced the price by only Rs 100-200. PM Modi has always been doing the same thing that somehow loots the pockets of the poor. When the BJP-ruled state governments see the centre doing such things, they think why should they also stay behind?
“If PM Modi is looting one pocket, then they will also loot the other pocket. Under this campaign, the Yogi Adityanath government of Uttar Pradesh has decided that electricity does not reach the homes of the poor people of Uttar Pradesh. To ensure this, the Yogi government of UP has increased the price of new electricity connections several times,” he shared.
Jasmine Shah mentioned that the BJP thought that if it does this work secretly, there will be no uproar in the country. But now when these figures reach the people, they will know how the BJP government is making the lives of the poor difficult. In the rural areas of Uttar Pradesh, it used to cost Rs 1,200 to get a new connection of 1 kilowatt, but now it has increased to about Rs 3,000. Similarly, it used to cost Rs 1,365 to get a new connection of 2 kilowatts, but now its price has increased to Rs 3,100. This is about 2.5 times more. Earlier a middle-class family had to pay Rs 8,000 to get a connection of 5 kilowatts, but now it has increased to Rs 17,365.
The AAP leader further added that in the country’s capital Delhi, where things are usually expensive, Arvind Kejriwal’s government has this magic that electricity prices are very cheap. Today, if someone wants to get a one or two-kilowatt electricity connection in Delhi, then only Rs 600 has to be paid for it. Whereas, only Rs 900 have to be paid for a 5 kilowatt connection. Usually, these 1.5-kilowatt connections are taken by poor laborers living in ‘jhuggis’. Even a refrigerator does not run at this much watts, only two tube lights and two fans run. BJP is robbing the houses of these poor laborers and saying that now it will take Rs 3,000 instead of Rs 1200 because it has to waive off the loans of rich capitalists.
Jasmine Shah mentioned, “This is not the first time that the BJP government in the country has looted people’s pockets. Wherever the BJP government comes, the electricity prices skyrocket. In the last 10 years, the Kejriwal government of Delhi is the only government in the country that has not allowed electricity prices to increase.
“In 2024, a household in Delhi will get a bill of Rs 985 for 400 units of electricity consumption. At the same time, the bill for 400 units in Gurugram comes to Rs 2,330, i.e. about 2.5 times more. In Uttar Pradesh, the bill for 400 units comes to Rs 2,950, which is about 3 times that of Delhi. In Madhya Pradesh, the price of 400 units of electricity is Rs 3,854 and in Maharashtra, one has to pay Rs 4,400 for 400 units of electricity. This is 4.5 times more than Delhi. BJP is openly committing robbery,” shared Jasmine Shah.
Jasmine Shah said that today the people of the country have understood that if any government wants, it can run the government honestly because Arvind Kejriwal has also shown it in Delhi. There was a lot of pressure on him from the electricity companies. The Lieutenant Governor and the BJP government at the centre put pressure on him. Many kinds of obstacles were created and it was said that the electricity prices will have to be increased in Delhi too.
“But Arvind Kejriwal stood like a rock in front of all these. He said that he will not let the electricity prices increase and on the contrary, he will also give free electricity. Before this, no Chief Minister of the country had thought of this miracle that 24 hours and free electricity can also be given, but Arvind Kejriwal did it in Delhi,” added the AAP leader.
Jasmine Shah said that today about 90% of the households in Delhi get either free or half electricity bills. There are about 60 lakh domestic electricity consumers in Delhi. Out of them, 38 lakh people get free electricity and 15 lakh households get half the electricity bill. Delhiites are watching the steps that the Yogi government of UP is going to take and understand that its meaning is clear, if the BJP forms the government in Delhi even by mistake, then free electricity is a far cry, like UP, Maharashtra and MP, their electricity bills will also increase four to five times.
“There is no doubt about this. The BJP leaders sitting in Delhi are praising this step of the Yogi government to loot more money from the poor and waive off the loans of the rich,” concluded the AAP leader.
