Drugs are being sold openly in Delhi, with hundreds of used syringes littering the parks of Naraina village — just a few kilometres away from the Prime Minister’s residence. Despite Delhi being under a so-called ‘four-engine’ BJP government for the past eight months, no action has been taken. Senior AAP leader and MCD in-charge Durgesh Pathak warned that law and order in the capital has collapsed.
While Punjab under the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has shown that strict action against drugs is possible, in Delhi the BJP looks the other way. Police move instantly against AAP leaders, but when it comes to drug mafias, they retreat. Durgesh Pathak emphasised that the Chief Minister and the LG continue to remain silent, the message is clear—BJP’s complicity stands exposed.
Addressing a press conference, senior AAP leader and MCD in-charge Durgesh Pathak stated, “The condition of parks in Naraina village of Rajinder Nagar assembly constituency is pathetic. Large numbers of syringes used for drugs are found scattered in the parks. Naraina is a historic village located barely 5–7 kilometres from the Prime Minister’s residence. It can be called the heart of Delhi.”
He elaborated, “In most parks of Rajinder Nagar, between 200 to 1000 syringes used for injecting drugs are lying around. Drugs are being sold openly in Delhi. At several shops, bottles and syringes of drugs can be easily purchased using code words or through old connections. People then consume those drugs in the parks and discard the syringes right there.”
Pointing to the BJP MLA representing Rajinder Nagar, Durgesh Pathak emphasised, “Even the MLA himself lives in Naraina ward. The Naraina village park is merely 200–300 metres away from his house. Drugs have emerged as a major problem in Rajinder Nagar. A year ago, I raised the issue of drugs inside the assembly and also met senior officials of Delhi Police, but no action was taken. Compared to a year ago, the situation in Naraina’s parks has only worsened. For the past 8 months, Delhi has had a four-engine BJP government, yet no action is being taken to curb drugs.”
The former local MLA added, “When the AAP government was in place, Delhi Police did not report to it. Even then, AAP staged several protests against drugs, met the Police Commissioner, and sought time with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. But no action was taken from anywhere. Today, BJP’s four-engine government is ruling, with Delhi Police under its control. The Centre, Delhi government, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the Lieutenant Governor (LG) are all under BJP, yet no steps are being taken to stop drugs.”
Comparing with Punjab’s AAP-led government, Durgesh Pathak said, “If the AAP government can take strong action against drugs, then why can’t the BJP government in Delhi do the same? For years, drugs have been a growing problem in Delhi. The city’s youth are increasingly turning towards drugs. When drugs are being sold openly and syringes are being injected inside parks, it is clear that law and order in Delhi has completely collapsed. There is neither surveillance nor any system in place.”
On law and order, he added, “There appear to be only two reasons behind the collapse. First, the BJP government is incapable of fixing law and order. Second, there is collusion between BJP leaders and the police. Today, from Station House Officers (SHOs) to the entire Delhi Police, everyone is working hand in glove with BJP leaders. If a case has to be filed against AAP leaders, the police does it within a minute. If an AAP worker writes something on social media, the police immediately call and threaten to arrest him.”
“Under political pressure, the police file FIRs against anyone and detain people, but when it comes to taking action against drugs, the police back away. If the BJP is not acting against drugs, it clearly means BJP leaders are complicit in promoting it,” he asserted.
Appealing to CM Rekha Gupta and the LG, Durgesh Pathak said, “Take action against drugs and ensure strict monitoring. Direct the police to curb drugs. If the police act with strictness, the drug network can be dismantled within a week. If the BJP does not act against drugs, the Aam Aadmi Party will be forced to believe that the BJP itself is hand in glove with the drug trade. This is a very serious issue, and our youth are falling prey to it.”
