As the BJP celebrates the life imprisonment of Sajjan Kumar in the 1984 Sikh massacre case, AAP’s Tilak Nagar MLA Jarnail Singh has delivered a sharp rebuke, demanding that the BJP hold its own leaders accountable as well. Jarnail Singh called out the hypocrisy of the BJP, insisting that BJP and RSS members involved in the massacre must face justice too.
He pointed out that Captain Amarinder Singh, who recently switched from Congress to BJP, and BJP’s Jangpura MLA Tarvinder Singh Marwah—both demanded severe punishment for all culprits, regardless of party affiliation.
In a press conference, Senior AAP leader and MLA Jarnail Singh highlighted that today, the Delhi High Court has sentenced Sajjan Kumar, the prime accused in the 1984 Sikh massacre, to life imprisonment. Jarnail Singh stated, “It is often said, ‘Justice delayed is justice denied.’ After 41 years, the main accused has been sentenced to life imprisonment, but he is already around 80 years old and has lived a lavish life.”
Jarnail Singh further stated, “Since all the victim families reside in my constituency, I have been receiving continuous calls from them. The sentiment among them is that even after 41 years, the so-called justice they have received is merely the sentencing of an 80-year-old convict to life imprisonment.”
He added, “They had hoped that someone responsible for the massacre of thousands of Sikhs would at least be given the death penalty, not just life imprisonment”
He noted that the BJP leaders are taking credit, claiming that they formed the SIT, which investigated the case and secured the conviction of the main accused. Jarnail Singh said, “I want to tell these BJP leaders that while it is good that an SIT was formed, a killer is a killer—whether they belong to Congress or BJP.”
The Senior AAP leader added, “If they believe their SIT is delivering justice for the 1984 massacre, then all those directly linked to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and RSS, who were involved in the killings, should also be punished.”
Jarnail Singh mentioned the FIR number 446/93, dated August 1993. He said, “This FIR includes 14 key names, linked to multiple cases registered across various police stations in areas like Hari Nagar, Ashram, Sunlight Colony, and Bhagwan Dass Road. Among those named in these cases are prominent leaders associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).”
He added, “Their names are Ram Kumar Jain, Pritam Singh, Ram Chander Gupta, Ratan Lal, Gyan Lal, Chander Sen, Pradeep Kumar, Hansraj, Babu Lal, Ved, Mahipal Sharma, Padam Kumar, and Suresh Chand.”
The AAP MLA also highlighted that one of these individuals even served as an election agent for former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He added, “If the BJP believes that its SIT is ensuring justice for the 1984 massacre, then it should also take action against its own leaders who were directly involved in the violence.”
He revealed another shocking fact, stating, “The person in the photograph displayed here is Tarvinder Singh Marwah, who is currently a BJP MLA from Jangpura. He himself had publicly disclosed the names of those responsible and had even stated in a press conference that BJP and RSS members involved in the 1984 Sikh massacre should be punished. Today, he is part of the BJP, he had clearly acknowledged that RSS and BJP leaders were complicit in the massacre.”
Jarnail Singh added, “Captain Amarinder Singh, who was previously in Congress but is now in the BJP, had also clearly stated that those from the RSS and BJP who were involved in the 1984 Sikh massacre should be punished. No matter who committed the atrocity—whether a leader from the BJP, Congress, or anyone else—it is the duty of our judiciary to ensure the strictest punishment.”
On behalf of the 1984 massacre victim families, Jarnail Singh made a plea to the judiciary, “41 years is an extremely long time. The person sentenced today is already around 80 years old and has lived his life in comfort.”
He added, “Before other perpetrators also evade justice through natural death, the judicial system must act swiftly and punish them with the strictest possible sentence to uphold the integrity of Indian democracy. Justice must not be selective.”
