In a sharp rebuttal to the BJP’s allegations that Punjab is stopping the water supply to Delhi and Haryana, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday lambasted the BJP, asserting that it is forcefully diverting Punjab’s legitimate share of water—even as the BJP claims India has blocked the flow of the Indus River to Pakistan.
Calling out this brazen hooliganism, AAP Delhi State President Saurabh Bharadwaj questioned why the Centre—despite cancelling the Indus Waters Treaty—has failed to divert even a fraction of that water to northern states facing acute shortages. “If there’s no water scarcity, why is BJP snatching Punjab’s share instead of governing responsibly?” he asked, slamming the so-called “four-engine government” for making excuses rather than addressing the crisis.
In a media interaction, AAP Delhi State President Saurabh Bharadwaj stated, “The Punjab government has not stopped the water meant for Delhi or Haryana. In fact, it is the BJP that is resorting to hooliganism and snatching away Punjab’s rightful share of water. Now that the Indus Waters Treaty has been cancelled, why don’t they divert that water to Haryana and Delhi? Why are they stealing Punjab’s water?”
Taking potshots at the BJP administration, the AAP Delhi State President noted, “Right now, they (BJP) have a “four-engine” government in Delhi. Yet, they are unable to govern. Even now, they are busy hurling abuses at us. Is it our doing that the entire city is suffering from overflowing sewers? Is it our fault that black, contaminated water is flowing through people’s taps across Delhi? Is it our responsibility that there are repeated power outages? If you cannot run the government, then resign. Stop making excuses.”
Saurabh Bharadwaj asserted, “Pravesh Verma is just joking. When the central government has blocked the Indus River and stopped the entire flow of water to Pakistan, then India clearly has an abundance of water. If just a fraction of that—say even 1%—is given to Delhi by the Government of India, the water crisis in Delhi will be resolved.”
The AAP Delhi State President pointed out, stating, “When we used to say that water was not coming from Haryana, the BJP and the Lieutenant Governor would respond by saying, ‘No, no, there’s plenty of water. It’s just that the administration doesn’t know how to distribute it.’ They claimed the AAP didn’t know how to run the Delhi government. Well then, you’re in power now. Go ahead and govern—weren’t you the ones who said there was no shortage of water?”
Saurabh Bharadwaj took to ‘X’ and responded, stating: “Amazing, BJP was saying that the Central Government has dried up the whole of Pakistan by stopping all the water of Indus River. There is no water left even in the toilets. Where did all that water go? Bring some water from the Indus River to Delhi also. Or was it all a lie?”
“BJP lies every day and gets caught every day. The minister is saying that Punjab has stopped Delhi’s water supply. Whereas neither Yamuna nor Ganga, none of these rivers flows from Punjab,” he stated in another post.
