Just one and a half months into BJP rule, Delhiites are already facing a financial burden. The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has massively increased charges for new water and sewer connections under the guise of infrastructure development. AAP MLA Anil Jha criticised the BJP government, stating that the DJB’s notification confirms a 55% surge in commercial connection charges and a 10% increase for residential connections, impacting 80% of those in unauthorised and resettlement colonies.
During a press conference, AAP MLA Anil Jha stated that it has been just one and a half months since the BJP Government came to power in Delhi, and already, its true face has been revealed. He said it is now becoming clear that Delhiites will not get any relief under BJP rule.
Anil Jha pointed out that the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) has issued a shocking notification. He recalled how, in the assembly, a minister had previously claimed that the previous government had incurred a loss of ₹1,000 crore on electricity. He said this statement clearly indicates that the BJP government is preparing to increase electricity prices in the coming days.
He further stated that according to the DJB notification, under the pretext of infrastructure development, new water and sewer connections will see a 10-15% price increase, with the additional cost being recovered from the people of Delhi. He warned, “This decision would impact 80% of the city’s population, including residents of unauthorised colonies, resettlement areas, and jhuggis.”
Anil Jha urged the BJP government to reconsider this notification. He said, “AAP strongly opposes this move. BJP’s top leaders had assured during elections that they would not tamper with the public welfare relief provided by the previous government. Yet, within just one and a half months, they have made their first move against the people.”
He also criticised the Chief Minister’s statements about introducing new schemes for businesspersons and providing funds for construction units, pointing out that the DJB notification contradicts these claims. “How will businesses grow when commercial sewer and water connection charges have been increased by 55%? This will directly impact labourers working in these establishments. Meanwhile, residential connection charges have also been raised by over 10%,” he said.
Anil Jha demanded that the BJP government roll back the increased sewer and water connection charges immediately. He warned, “If the charges are not withdrawn, AAP will launch a strong protest against this anti-people decision.”
