The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has pointed out that the BJP is staging a publicity stunt to take credit for welfare work done under the AAP government. Leader of Opposition (LoP) Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Ankush Narang, revealed that on August 11, BJP Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh will hold a public event—complete with dhol-nagaadas—to hand over money from the Teachers’ Welfare Fund to families of deceased MCD teachers. He added that the Mayor will also distribute reappointment letters to employees who had already received compassionate jobs during the AAP government’s tenure.
“BJP doesn’t know how to govern or get work done. All they know is how to convert someone else’s work into photo-ops,” Ankush Narang said. Challenging the BJP to act beyond theatrics, he demanded that they implement the pending AAP-era proposal to regularise 12,000 MCD employees.
Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters on, MCD LoP Ankush Narang called out the “four-engine government” of the BJP—Centre, Delhi LG, MCD, and Mayor—for complete failure in governance and decency. “Despite having four engines in power, BJP has failed even at basic civic functions. Delhi remained flooded due to poor desilting of drains and open neglect of stormwater infrastructure. BJP has replaced governance with mere photo sessions. This culture has now infected MCD as well,” said Ankush Narang.
The MCD LoP revealed that on August 11, MCD Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh is planning to distribute cheques, with drums and fanfare, to families of teachers who passed away years ago. “I have a list of 13 deceased teachers from various zones. Their families haven’t yet received the welfare amount that was deducted from their salaries. Now BJP wants to hand this over with dhol-nagadas, as if it’s a celebration. This is shameful,” he said.
He explained that the cases date back to 2016, 2018, and 2020—when MCD was under BJP rule. “Earlier, under the Teacher Welfare Fund, South MCD used to deduct ₹1,000 annually from every teacher’s salary, and their family would receive ₹7 lakh in case of death. In East and North MCD, ₹500 was deducted—because even salaries weren’t paid on time under BJP—and ₹5 lakh was given in such cases.”
“When the AAP government came to power in 2022, we unified and reformed the fund. Now, ₹1,000 is deducted uniformly from every teacher’s salary and ₹7 lakh is provided to the family in the event of death. Yet the cases pending from 2016 to 2024 have remained unresolved under BJP’s MCD. Now they’re giving the money with tamasha and noise to show off,” he added.
Ankush Narang further exposed BJP’s plans to exploit compassion-based employees for PR. “Around 29-30 Class-IV employees have also been invited for this programme, so their families can be present. These are education department staff who were appointed on compassionate grounds after the death of a family member. These same individuals already received jobs under the AAP government. Still, BJP is now calling them again to hand over the same joining letters in a staged photo-op. This is nothing but drama. BJP neither wants to govern MCD, nor Delhi. They just want to recycle AAP’s work and pass it off as their own through PR gimmicks,” he stated.
AAP’s MCD LoP demanded that if BJP truly wants to work in MCD, it should take real steps. “Just like AAP regularised 12,000 Dalit workers, BJP should immediately regularise these employees too. They now have a four-engine government—what’s stopping them? Launch fresh recruitments. Stop stealing AAP’s work and repackaging it for publicity. BJP and Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh should be ashamed of turning even matters of death and grief into celebration for their own image-building. Neither should this event be conducted by the Mayor, nor should the MCD’s education department be made to enable it,” he concluded.
