Just days after winning elections in Delhi, the BJP has pushed the city into a power crisis, with hours-long electricity cuts disrupting daily life. Delhiites, including BJP’s own workers, have taken to social media to express their frustration, highlighting the worsening condition of the power sector under BJP rule.
Senior AAP leader and Outgoing CM Atishi slammed the BJP for its mismanagement, stating that Delhi, which once had a stable power supply, is now witnessing a situation akin to Uttar Pradesh, where frequent and prolonged power outages are common. She warned that if such blackouts are happening in February, the peak summer months could bring an even more severe electricity crisis.
Highlighting the ongoing power cuts in Delhi since 9th February, senior AAP leader Atishi stated, “For the past three days, different parts of Delhi have been experiencing prolonged power cuts. This is not limited to just one area. If one checks social media, they will see numerous complaints. On 9th February, there was a four-hour power outage in Sainik Enclave, Mohan Garden. On 8th February, midnight, Sunlight Colony 2, Ashram faced an all-night power cut.”
She continued, “On 10th February, Radheypuri experienced a two-hour outage, Vikaspuri KG-2 saw a four-hour power cut, and Anand Parbat on Rohtak Road suffered extended cuts of more than two hours on 11th February. Malka Ganj had a five-hour outage, and Tilak Nagar faced an hour-long disruption on 12th February. Vikas Nagar Extension, Uttam Nagar experienced an entire night without electricity. Most interestingly, even a BJP official tweeted about a six-hour-long power outage in Sangam Vihar.”
Emphasising the widespread nature of the crisis, the senior AAP leader said, “There are hundreds of such examples in just the last three days. People across North, South, East, and West Delhi have been tweeting to BSES and Tata Power with their CA numbers, reporting outages. Areas like Malikpur and New Delhi have also been affected. This is not an isolated issue but a complete collapse of Delhi’s power supply. If you check, there are at least 30-35 more complaints online regarding power cuts, all from BSES and Tata Power consumers over just three days.”
She compared the current situation to the power management under the AAP government. “Under Arvind Kejriwal’s government, power infrastructure was closely monitored and supervised on an hourly basis. The moment the AAP government was removed, Delhi’s power sector collapsed within three days.”
Atishi added, “People are calling in distress. Last night, Mayur Vihar Phase-III faced an outage. This morning, I received several calls from residents of DDA Flats, saying they had to buy an inverter after ten years. A parent told me their child has board exams, and they couldn’t risk another outage disrupting their studies. People in Sangam Vihar, Uttam Nagar, and Vikas Puri are also rushing to buy inverters. In just three days after BJP’s victory, many have already realised their mistake in the elections.”
Questioning BJP’s ability to manage governance, the senior AAP leader stated, “People are now wondering: Did the exit of AAP immediately expose BJP’s inability to govern? Someone told me today, ‘We bought an inverter now, but it’s only February. What will happen in May, June, and July when peak demand crosses 8,500 megawatts?’”
“BJP has never been able to manage governance. From 1993 to 1998, when they were in power, Delhi’s power sector was in shambles. Today, they govern 20 states, all suffering similar power issues,” she asserted.
Atishi expressed concern over Delhi being mismanaged under BJP rule. “It is deeply concerning that BJP is turning Delhi into Uttar Pradesh. In UP, power cuts of two to four hours were common. Within just three days, the same is happening in Delhi. The difference is clear—educated leadership like Arvind Kejriwal, an engineer who understands the power sector, versus an unqualified leadership known for fake degrees and abusive politics.”
During a media interaction, she pointed out BJP’s immediate control post-election. She said, “BJP has already locked ministers’ offices, barred staff from secretariat access, and restricted file movements since 8th February. It is evident that BJP took charge immediately after the election results, and the consequences are already visible. Delhiites now see what it means to bring BJP into power.”
