Just a light spell of rain, and all so-called ‘four engines’ of BJP’s Delhi government drowned—exposing it as a disaster for the city. Pointing to waterlogging even in CM Rekha Gupta’s own constituency, senior AAP leader and Burari MLA Sanjeev Jha slammed the BJP for empty photo-ops, false promises, and filthy drains that remain 40% uncleared despite massive budget claims.
Addressing a press conference, senior AAP leader and Burari MLA Sanjeev Jha pointed to flooding even after a light spell of rain, stating, “In just a few showers of the monsoon, all four engines of BJP’s ‘Phulera Ki Panchayat’ government in Delhi have drowned. The BJP has completely failed to prevent waterlogging in the capital. I showed a video from Shalimar Bagh—Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s own constituency—where water remained accumulated for hours even two to three hours after the rain stopped.”
Highlighting BJP’s empty promises before monsoon, Sanjeev Jha said, “This time, BJP ministers and leaders had promised there would be no waterlogging in Delhi. Before the rains, Delhi’s LG, CM, and ministers conducted photo ops across the city. They claimed that over 400 locations prone to waterlogging were identified and nodal officers had been deployed there. It was also said that all previous waterlogging spots were marked and resolved. But the reality is now before the people of Delhi.”
Explaining the drainage infrastructure, he continued, “There are three agencies managing Delhi’s drains. First, MCD handles drains in colonies. Second, PWD manages its own set of drains. Third, the Irrigation and Flood Control Department maintains the large drains. MCD drains flow into PWD drains, and PWD drains ultimately flow into the Irrigation Department’s bigger drains. If MCD drains aren’t cleaned, they choke PWD drains, which in turn choke the major drains. This exact chain failure is what Delhi is witnessing today.”
Exposing the government’s shifting deadlines, Sanjeev Jha added, “BJP ministers first said all cleaning would be done by the end of April, then extended it to June 15, and finally to June 30. Their own website shows PWD has 2,140 km of drains, out of which 840 km have still not been cleaned—clearly, 40% of PWD drains remain untouched.”
“Similarly, MCD has about 800 km of drains, of which 150–200 km—nearly 25%—haven’t been cleaned. The Irrigation and Flood Control Department has 23 major drains in Delhi, and 8–10 of them are still partially cleaned. Apart from this, each assembly has smaller drains under the same department, which connect to the main drains. More than half of these remain uncleaned,” he further added.
Recalling a bold promise, Sanjeev Jha said, “CM Rekha Gupta had confidently declared in an interview that this time, there would be no waterlogging anywhere in Delhi. BJP claimed massive budget allocations to address the issue: ₹150 crore for drain re-modelling, ₹9,000 crore for sanitation and water management, ₹600 crore to the Irrigation Department just for flood control, and ₹20 crore for super sucker machines. If, despite this scale of funding, drains haven’t been cleaned, then who is accountable?”
Calling out the ruling party’s failure, the senior AAP leader asserted, “The government that the people of Delhi elected has turned into a disaster for them. What we’re witnessing today is a ‘vipda’ government. If the government claims all drains have been cleaned, the Chief Minister should call a special assembly session, release a white paper, and reveal the real situation of all drains. Today, even a few minutes of rain is enough to trap people indoors, uncertain if they’ll reach home safely. The BJP’s ‘vipda’ government has created such chaos that people should consider arranging boats before stepping outside.”
Making a sharp demand for transparency, Sanjeev Jha said, “The people of Delhi deserve to know the truth behind the grand promises made by BJP’s Chief Minister and ministers. From top to bottom, their claims remain confined to paperwork; none of it is visible on the ground. This is just the beginning of monsoon, and already the city is in panic. Videos of waterlogging woes are flooding social media. Delhiites had voted for the BJP with high hopes, believing a four-engine government would mean better governance. Instead, this so-called four-engine government is sinking the very hopes of the people who trusted it.”
