The state of Delhi’s water and sewer systems has deteriorated drastically under the BJP government, said Leader of Opposition (LoP ) in the Delhi Assembly, Atishi, charging the BJP regime with abandoning basic civic responsibilities. Despite a ₹9,000 crore budget allocation to the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), there has been no progress on essential repair and maintenance, she pointed out.
LoP Atishi has exposed the complete failure of the BJP-led Delhi government in addressing the worsening water and sewer crisis in the city. In a video posted on her official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, Atishi highlighted the misery faced by the residents of Bal Mukund Khand in Giri Nagar due to persistent sewer overflow and contaminated water.
Atishi stated on X, “For the past two months, the entire city of Delhi has been struggling with sewer overflow and dirty water. The BJP-run Delhi government has completely failed in managing the city’s water and sewer systems. This is a government of mere slogans, not action. The Delhi Jal Board received a ‘jumla budget’ of ₹9000 crore, but when it comes to repairing sewers, they claim they don’t have a single rupee.”
Sharing the ground reality through the video, Atishi revealed, “This footage shows how people in Bal Mukund Khand, Giri Nagar, are suffering due to overflowing sewers and filthy water, but the Delhi government can’t even repair a small stretch of sewer line.”
She further said, “After persistent pressure from me, the Jal Board did issue a tender, but the work has not begun to date. The reason? The Jal Board says it doesn’t have the funds.” Addressing the Chief Minister, Atishi remarked, “CM Rekha Gupta ji, you have completely failed at governance. For the past two months, Delhi has been facing a complete breakdown in electricity, water, and sewer services.”
Voices from the Ground – Delhi Residents Speak Out
“Sewer Overflow for Over a Month”
Residents of Bal Mukund Khand in Giri Nagar have reported that they’ve been battling the problem of sewer overflow and dirty water for over a month. The situation has become so dire that sewage is seeping into their homes. This has rendered the water unfit for cooking or drinking, and residents have reported falling sick from consuming contaminated water.
“Sewer Water Flooding Our Kitchens, Forced to Live Like Animals”
One woman shared her harrowing experience, saying that sewer water enters even her kitchen. “We are forced to live like we’re in hell. The dirty water fills our kitchen, and it makes us sick. We have to fill buckets and throw the water out every day. The condition has become so bad that we are now living worse than animals because of this sewer mess,” she said.
“Living Becomes Miserable Amidst Filth and Dirty Water”
Residents also revealed that water purifiers and RO systems in their homes are breaking down due to the dirty water. Many renters in the area are being forced to consume unclean water. Despite repeated complaints to the Delhi Jal Board, no action has been taken so far.
“₹9000 Crore Budget to Jal Board, But No Money for 100 Meters of Sewer Line – Is This a ‘Jumla Budget’?”
Residents questioned the BJP-led government’s claims, saying that the Jal Board had floated a tender in March to replace a small sewer line. However, citing lack of funds, the work has not yet started. “The government approved a massive ₹9000 crore budget for the Jal Board. They must explain—was this just a ‘jumla budget’?” asked a local.
