Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s student wing, the Association of Students for Alternative Politics (ASAP), on Thursday marched through University of Delhi’s North Campus demanding a 50% concession on metro fares for students, slamming the fare hike and reminding the BJP of its unfulfilled election promise. During this, AAP Delhi State Vice President and MLA Sanjeev Jha said CM Rekha Gupta, herself a DU alumna, must understand the hardships faced by students and act on their legitimate demand.
Addressing the march, senior AAP leader and MLA Sanjeev Jha said that ASAP organised a march in Delhi University’s North Campus, from the School of Open Learning (SOL) to the Faculty of Law. He noted that rising metro fares have become a serious problem for DU students. “ASAP volunteers spoke to students in every college, and there was unanimous agreement — metro fares for students must be cut by 50%. That is why ASAP has been consistently raising this demand with the government and held today’s march.”
The AAP MLA pointed out, stating: “Since Delhi’s Chief Minister herself is a former DU student, she knows very well that most DU students come from outside Delhi and face immense hardship due to the steep metro fares. I hope that at least the demands of students from the very university she studied at will be fulfilled.”.
Meanwhile, senior AAP leader and former MLA Akhilesh Pati Tripathi added that DU students today marched in large numbers to demand a 50% concession in metro fares for students and to protest against the fare hike. “The streets were filled with students, showing the scale of their anger and demand. ASAP is also running a signature campaign across DU colleges and campuses on this issue. I appeal to all students to stand with ASAP on matters of student welfare. To transform student politics into a politics of student welfare and genuine student issues, everyone must support ASAP,” he said.
