AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal launched another scathing attack on the BJP-led Haryana government, holding them responsible for dangerously high ammonia levels in the Yamuna river, which supplies drinking water to Delhi. He condemned the BJP for deliberately contaminating the river, endangering the health of millions of Delhi residents.
Arvind Kejriwal challenged BJP and Congress leaders to drink the same high-ammonia water being supplied to Delhiites or issue a public apology. He also called out Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini for failing to address the crisis, despite repeated appeals from Delhi Chief Minister Atishi. Condemning the BJP’s threats of legal action against him for exposing the crisis, Arvind Kejriwal remained defiant, stating that he would not back down in his fight to protect the people of Delhi. He announced that AAP is sending bottles of the toxic water to BJP and Congress leaders, challenging them to prove its safety by drinking it publicly.
Addressing the media, Arvind Kejriwal highlighted that Delhi receives its drinking water from Haryana via the Yamuna and from Uttar Pradesh via the Ganga. When this water first enters Delhi, it is called raw water. This raw water is sent to water treatment plants, where it is purified before being supplied to households for drinking.
He explained that for the past few days, the water coming from Haryana through the Yamuna has been toxic. “Toxic water means that the level of ammonia in it has risen significantly—up to 7 PPM. Ammonia at this level is extremely dangerous to health; it can cause irreversible damage to multiple organs and poses a severe health hazard. It can even be fatal—exposure to such high levels of ammonia in water can lead to death,” he said.
The AAP Convenor said that his party raised this issue a few days ago because it was left with no choice. “Ammonia levels in the Yamuna had started rising gradually. When this happened, Atishi Ji called Nayab Singh Saini Ji—once, twice, three times, four times—requesting him to take action, as the rising ammonia levels posed a threat to people’s lives in Delhi. If the ammonia level exceeds 1 PPM, the water cannot be used in water treatment plants. In such cases, water treatment plants have to be shut down, and the contaminated water has to be diverted. If the ammonia level remains above 1 PPM, one by one, all our water treatment plants will have to shut down, creating a massive water crisis in Delhi. On the other hand, if this water is supplied directly, it would pose a serious health hazard.”
He informed that Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini responded to calls initially assuring that he would take action, but he did nothing. “Eventually, he even stopped answering Atishi Ji’s calls. What were we supposed to do for the people of Delhi? Clearly, politics was being played. Why did the Chief Minister of Haryana stop taking the Delhi CM’s calls? On one hand, they stopped responding, and on the other hand, ammonia levels kept rising—eventually reaching 7 PPM. When it reached this critical level, Atishi Ji had no choice but to publicly expose the situation—that Delhi was being supplied with toxic water with dangerously high ammonia levels through the Yamuna.”
Explaining the severity of the issue, he said: “Not only was there ammonia in the water, but if this high-ammonia water was processed in water treatment plants, chlorination would have to be done. Chlorine is mixed into the water during the treatment process. If ammonia and chlorine mix, it creates a deadly combination. People ask how we are saying that this water was lethal—because if we had chlorinated this water and supplied it to households, no one knows what kind of disaster might have occurred in Delhi.”
Arvind Kejriwal asserted that the AAP did not want to politicize this issue but wanted a solution. “That is why Atishi Ji kept calling them for several days, but they did not take action. The most shocking part is that ever since we raised this issue and exposed the 7 PPM ammonia level, the levels started decreasing. Today, ammonia levels have dropped to 3 PPM. This means they were responsible for increasing it in the first place and have now reduced it themselves.” He questioned, “How did ammonia levels suddenly decrease just because we raised our voices? Who was responsible for this?”
Talking about the Haryana Government’s stance on the issue, he said, “they are threatening us—saying they will file a case against us, that they will take legal action. They can do whatever they want! I want to tell these people: You are sending toxic water to the people of Delhi, playing with their health and their lives. High-ammonia water can cause irreversible damage to young children, yet instead of solving the issue, you are threatening us?”
“They say they want to put Kejriwal in jail—go ahead! I have just returned from jail. They say they will file a case—do it! But as long as I am alive, I will not allow the people of Delhi to drink poisonous water. I stand with the people of Delhi,” he declared.
He went on to say that the BJP & Haryana Government is openly threatening him, sending him legal notices and letters. “They can keep their notices and letters—I don’t care. Do whatever you want, but we will not allow toxic water in Delhi. And I will stand with the people of Delhi no matter what it takes.”
He also referred to Haryana CM’s PR stunt yesterday and said that Nayab Singh Saini had staged a drama—and got trapped in his own act. “The truth is always the truth, and when you walk the path of truth, God supports you. Yesterday, God stood with us. Saini Ji announced that he would drink the water from Palla in front of everyone—and he did. He took a sip of the water and immediately spit it out. Either the water smelled terrible, or it was so dirty that he couldn’t swallow it. The way he spat it out, it seemed like he was about to vomit.”
Directing his questions towards the Haryana CM, he said, “If you can’t even take a single sip of this water, how can you expect the people of Delhi to drink it?”
Arvind Kejriwal further announced, “Today, we have kept bottles of 7 PPM ammonia water mixed with chlorine. This is 7 PPM ammonia water with chlorine mixed in. The BJP and Congress have joined forces—both are playing with the health and lives of the people of Delhi. AAP MP Sanjay Singh, along with AAP leaders, will head to the BJP headquarters. We are sending these bottles to: Amit Shah, Virendra Sachdeva, Nayab Singh Saini and Rahul Gandhi.”
He concluded, “Let these four leaders drink this ammonia-mixed water in a press conference. If they do, we will accept that we were wrong. If they have the courage, if they claim to be speaking the truth, let them prove it by drinking this water in front of everyone.”
