Big boost for thousands of contractual MCD employees as the AAP’s MCD government has decided to regularise 12,000 workers in one go, with final approval set for the MCD House meeting on 25th February. Senior AAP leader Atishi said the party is delivering on its election promise, having already regularised 4,500 sanitation workers under Arvind Kejriwal’s leadership. She called it an unprecedented move in the country’s history.
On this historic decision, AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal took to his ‘X’ handle (erstwhile Twitter), stating: “Best wishes to all the 12,000 temporary employees of MCD. Aam Aadmi Party has kept its promise and taken a historic decision to make these temporary employees of the corporation permanent. This proposal will be passed in the MCD House meeting on 25 February.”
Senior AAP leader and former CM Atishi, along with MCD In-charge Durgesh Pathak, Mayor Mahesh Khichi, and Leader of the House Mukesh Goel, held a press conference at the party headquarters on Sunday to announce this historic decision. Atishi reaffirmed AAP’s commitment to regularising contractual employees, a promise the party has upheld since its inception.
She said, “AAP has always stood by its promise to make contractual employees permanent. From the very beginning, we have been committed to ensuring that those working in any government department on a temporary basis are given permanent status under an AAP government. In Punjab, the AAP government has been consistently regularising contract teachers. In Delhi, under AAP’s leadership in the MCD, we have already regularised 4,500 sanitation workers.”
Announcing a major decision, Atishi highlighted an upcoming milestone for contractual employees in the MCD. “Today, I am delighted to share that in the MCD House meeting on the 25th, 12,000 contractual employees will be regularised. This will be the biggest decision in MCD’s history, where such a large number of employees across various departments—sanitation workers, gardeners, beldars, teachers, junior engineers, and domestic breeding checkers—will be made permanent in a single decision. The 25th will be a landmark day in MCD’s history.”
The former Delhi CM emphasised that no other government in the country has taken such a significant step in one go. “I believe that no government in India has ever regularised 12,000 contractual employees in a single decision. This is the AAP government, led by Arvind Kejriwal, fulfilling its commitment to contractual workers. When we contested the MCD elections, we promised to make all contractual employees permanent, and today, we are delivering on that promise.”
Meanwhile; senior AAP leader and Mayor, Mahesh Khichi, reiterated AAP’s commitment to fulfilling its promises. He said, “Since coming to power, AAP has honoured every commitment it made. Over the past two years, our government in MCD has demonstrated this by regularising 4,500 employees. Now, in the upcoming MCD House meeting on the 25th, we will regularise another 12,000 employees across all departments—gardeners, beldars, sanitation workers, and junior engineers. Arvind Kejriwal’s vision has always been to provide job security to workers, and we are ensuring that every promise we have made is kept.”
