As the BJP-led Delhi government continues its aggressive demolition of ‘jhuggi bastis’ across Delhi, fear and uncertainty grip thousands of families living under constant threat of displacement. In response, Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Delhi State President Saurabh Bharadwaj is continuously visiting jhuggi settlements across the capital to listen to residents and the party is hellbent on figuring out a solution.
Today, as part of this outreach, Saurabh Bharadwaj held meetings with residents of jhuggi clusters in Adarsh Nagar and Model Town, where terrified families shared how they are forced to live in fear, unsure when the bulldozers will reach their doorsteps.
AAP Delhi State President Saurabh Bharadwaj revealed the intense discussions held with residents during recent meetings. “We discussed in depth how the newly elected BJP government in Delhi is demolishing the jhuggis of thousands of downtrodden and working-class families, rendering them homeless,” he said.
Saurabh Bharadwaj emphasized that these labourers, who live in jhuggi settlements, have travelled thousands of kilometers from remote regions of Jharkhand, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and other states to provide their children with education, to live a life of dignity, and to earn their livelihood through honest labour.
Calling out the injustice, he added, “These people may be poor, but they are not thieves or dishonest. They work hard with integrity just to ensure their children can eat two square meals a day.” He highlighted that over the past several days, the BJP-led Delhi government has been brutally clearing these jhuggi settlements across the city.
Commenting on the ongoing pattern of demolition, Saurabh Bharadwaj stated, “The way the BJP-led Delhi government is targeting jhuggi settlements one after another, it seems the party does not want poor and working-class people to live in Delhi.” He warned that if the pace of these bulldozer operations continues, a significant number of jhuggi clusters will be wiped out, making it nearly impossible for the poor to survive in the city. “This is not just destruction—it’s a message that poor people are unwelcome in their own capital,” he said.
The AAP Delhi State President urged for collective resistance: “All the downtrodden and residents of jhuggi bastis in Delhi must unite and raise their voice against this barbaric campaign.” He called upon both those whose jhuggis have already been demolished and those who are under threat to stand together and expose BJP’s duplicity to the nation. “On one hand, the BJP seeks votes in Bihar to form the government; on the other, it is demolishing the homes of poor migrants from Bihar in Delhi’s jhuggi bastis and driving them out of the city.”
He further targeted the BJP’s hypocrisy in Tamil Nadu: “We must also expose BJP’s real character in Tamil Nadu. It must be told how the BJP government in Delhi bulldozed the homes of poor Tamil residents who have been living for 40 years in the Madrasi Camp of Jangpura constituency, making them homeless overnight.”
Concluding his statement, Saurabh Bharadwaj issued a clarion call for action. “Through these meetings, we are announcing the launch of a major movement against this brutal campaign by BJP’s Delhi government on June 29. I appeal to all jhuggi residents—join this movement and raise your voice for your rights.” He stated, “We will gather at Jantar Mantar on June 29 and appeal to the central government to take appropriate action on this issue.”
