The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has handed over the BJP another major setback as the party today proudly announced the inclusion of Padma Shri awardee and internationally renowned social worker Jitender Singh ‘Shunty’ in its ranks. AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal welcomed Jitender Singh ‘Shunty’ to the party by presenting him withAAP’s signature cap and ‘patka’(scarf), praising his extraordinary contributions to society and unwavering commitment to serving humanity over the last 39 years.
Speaking on the occasion, AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal said, “It brings me immense joy to welcome Jitender Singh ‘Shunty’ to the AAP today. Jitender Singh Shunty needs no introduction. He is renowned not just in Delhi or across the country but also internationally for his exceptional contributions to social service. For the past 39 years, he has dedicated himself selflessly to serving society.”
The AAP Supremo highlighted Jitender Singh Shunty’s reputation as the ‘Ambulance Man’ and acknowledged his unique efforts in ensuring dignity for the deceased, often a neglected aspect of society. “Most people do not think about the deceased because they do not bring votes. After all, once a person passes away, they cease to be of any political relevance. However, it takes a compassionate and noble soul with a beating heart to care for them. Jitender Singh ‘Shunty’ has reportedly ensured the respectful cremation of over 70,000 dead bodies, transporting them to cremation grounds with utmost dignity,” Arvind Kejriwal said.
He further elaborated on Jitender Singh Shunty’s unparalleled work during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many families refused to claim the bodies of their loved ones out of fear. “Shunty Ji not only took on this daunting task but also contracted COVID-19 himself while fulfilling this mission. Even when his entire family was battling the virus, he remained committed to his cause. For such a deed, he was conferred with the ‘Padma Shri’ award,” Arvind Kejriwal added.
The AAP Chief also praised Jitender Singh Shunty’s extensive contributions to society, saying, “In addition to this, ‘Shunty’ Ji provides ambulance assistance to patients, taking them timely to hospitals, organizes blood donation camps, and provides medical treatment to the underprivileged.”
Arvind Kejriwal highlighted the natural alignment between Jitender Singh Shunty’s work and AAP’s mission, noting, “The AAP serves people from birth to old age, while his work extends even beyond life by serving the dead. This natural alliance reflects the shared ethos of selfless service. For us, politics is not about power but an opportunity to serve, and Shunty Ji embodies the same principle.”
The AAP head further emphasized, “Having served twice as a councilor and once as an MLA. He draws inspiration from Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, just as we do, making this association even more special. His inclusion in the AAP will not only strengthen our party but also amplify his ability to serve when supported by the government. Together, his efforts will gain momentum, and his services will reach new heights.”
Expressing his thoughts on joining the AAP, Jitender Singh ‘Shunty’ said, “I had distanced myself from politics for a long time, despite having been elected three times in the past. My focus shifted entirely to service, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, where I was blessed with opportunities to serve and received immense respect.”
Recalling a significant moment, he added, “While performing the cremation of unclaimed bodies, Arvind Kejriwal Ji called me and said, ‘Shunty Ji, I want to contribute to this noble cause as well.’ I asked for some time to think, but deep down, my conscience, my family, and my friends reminded me that his work and mine shared the same purpose.”
Jitender Singh ‘Shunty’ expressed his alignment with Arvind Kejriwal’s vision, saying, “Arvind Kejriwal serves people from birth to old age, addressing their needs throughout life. And when these people leave the world, particularly our migrant brothers who work tirelessly in Delhi yet often lack even basic dignity in death, I take up the responsibility to ensure they receive respectful last rites.”
He added, “I realized that if he is taking care of the living, I can handle the service of the deceased. Together, we can ensure that from life to death, every need is met with dignity. Moreover, aligning with the Delhi government could mean fulfilling this mission on a larger scale. Fortunately, both of us are followers of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh, who is our mentor and guide. Observing Arvind Kejriwal Ji’s dedication to service, I decided to merge my mission with his vision, as our principles are aligned.”
Jitender Singh ‘Shunty’ also reflected on his decision to re-enter politics, stating, “Initially, I was reluctant to return to politics, but Arvind Kejriwal Ji convinced me by saying, ‘Shunty Ji, we serve the needs of the living, and you serve the needs of the deceased. Together, we can ensure that every vulnerable individual receives respect in life and dignity in death.’ His words resonated with me, and I realized this partnership could amplify my work and bring dignity to the poor during their lives and after their passing.”
He concluded, “For the first time, the Delhi Assembly will focus on the human rights of the helpless and, especially, the unclaimed deceased. Let me remind you, the concept of human rights was championed by Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh himself during his 123-day hunger strike in Lahore Jail. Inspired by his ideals, I voluntarily decided to re-enter politics—not for power, but as a medium to earn blessings. Ultimately, it is these blessings and the prayers of others that will accompany us beyond this life. As I always say, the essence of humanity lies in fostering brotherhood among all.”
Meanwhile, senior AAP leader and MLA Durgesh Pathak shared his thoughts on the development, stating, “Today is a day of great joy and pride for us. Joining us is Jitender Singh ‘Shunty’, widely known across the nation as the ‘Ambulance Man’ and honored with the title of ‘Corona Warrior’ during the pandemic. A recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri award, Shunty needs no introduction. His name and work are celebrated not just in India but around the globe. Today, he is officially becoming a part of our family, the AAP. It is a matter of immense pride for us that such a distinguished personality has chosen to join hands with the AAP.”
