Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) celebrated a major victory in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) mayoral elections with the election of Mahesh Kumar Khichi as the new Mayor. This marks a historic moment as Delhi finally welcomes a Dalit Mayor, reinforcing AAP’s commitment to the ideals of social justice championed by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. Adding on to the celebrations, AAP Councillor Ravinder Bhardwaj was elected unopposed to the post of Deputy Mayor during the same sitting.
AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal expressed his pride in the party’s commitment to following the ideals of Baba Saheb and congratulated Mahesh Kumar Khichi, encouraging him to continue the MCD’s progress in public welfare. “The Aam Aadmi Party follows the dreams and ideals of Baba Saheb. If any party tries to deprive the Dalit community of their rights, we will not let them succeed,” Arvind Kejriwal emphasised on X.
In another tweet, he wrote, “Congratulations to Mahesh Kumar on being elected the new Mayor of Delhi. Work with dedication for the public and continue to advance the good work happening in the MCD.” “Congratulations to Ravinder Bhardwaj on being elected Deputy Mayor. Strengthen and continue the public welfare work being done in the corporation,” he further wrote.
Senior AAP Leader Manish Sisodia also stepped forward to celebrate the victory on X. He wrote “Heartfelt congratulations to Mahesh Kumar Khichi of the Aam Aadmi Party on becoming the new Mayor of Delhi! This is not just our victory but of the voice of the people of Delhi and the triumph of Baba Saheb’s Constitution. Anti-Dalit forces tried every possible way to obstruct the election, but the spirit of the Constitution and the public’s determination overcame every conspiracy. Thanks to the Aam Aadmi Party, Delhi has a Dalit Mayor. I am confident that under the leadership of Mahesh Khichi, the vision of development of Arvind Kejriwal for the MCD will reach new heights. Long live the Constitution, long live democracy.”
While, CM Atishi, highlighted that attempts by the BJP to delay the mayoral election could not hinder the democratic process. “The anti-Dalit BJP attempted to delay the mayoral election, but once again, Baba Saheb’s Constitution has emerged victorious,” Atishi stated. She extended her congratulations to Mayor Mahesh Khichi and Deputy Mayor Ravinder Bhardwaj, calling their success a testament to democracy’s triumph over BJP’s tactics.
AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, during a media interaction, expressed his pleasure over Mahesh Khinchi’s election as Delhi’s new Mayor. He said, “I am very pleased that Mahesh Khichi will work to bring Arvind Kejriwal’s and the Aam Aadmi Party’s policies to the people through the MCD. Our priority is to make Delhi clean and hygienic, and he will strive to meet this public expectation. On behalf of the AAP and its workers, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Mahesh Khichi.”
AAP Councillor Mahesh Khichi, newly elected as Mayor, expressed his joy, stating, “This is a day of immense happiness. First and foremost, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our former Chief Minister and respected leader, Arvind Kejriwal, for elevating a humble worker like me to such an important role.”
Regarding his half-term tenure, Mahesh Khinchi remarked, “while BJP’s mischief had limited our time, we would make the most of it. The five months ahead will be dedicated to serving Delhi. We won, and a victory is victory.”
He added, “Our top priority is to improve Delhi’s sanitation system and continue serving the city. In a few months, the Delhi Assembly elections will be upon us, and we’re approaching them with full strength. The people of Delhi stand with us and with their former CM Arvind Kejriwal.”
