he Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House witnessed huge uproar on Thursday as the issue of regularising 12,000 contractual employees dominated proceedings. Under the leadership of Leader of Opposition (LoP) Ankush Narang, AAP councillors strongly demanded their immediate regularisation.
However, BJP Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh abruptly adjourned the House. In protest, AAP councillors raised slogans inside the chamber. Ankush Narang reminded the House that the proposal to regularise these employees had already been passed under the AAP government and urged the BJP-led MCD to implement it. He called out the BJP’s so-called “four-engine government” of being anti-Dalit and of deliberately denying rightful benefits to MCD workers.
MCD House LoP Ankush Narang said, “When AAP was in power in the MCD, we passed a proposal to regularise 12,000 contractual employees and allocated ₹800 crore in the budget for their salaries and retirement benefits. But now the BJP-led MCD refuses to implement it. Let the BJP take the credit for regularising these workers, but at least regularise them. This is their rightful due. Yet, the BJP’s four-engine government doesn’t want to grant employees what they deserve.”
He continued, “The BJP is anti-Dalit. They have always worked against Dalits. This is a deliberate move by BJP to avoid regularising Dalit employees. The Aam Aadmi Party government had regularised 12,000 workers. Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh must instruct the MCD Commissioner to implement it. What’s the problem in doing so?”
Ankush Narang asserted, “It was during the AAP’s full majority government that these employees were regularised. Since then, we’ve been urging the MCD Commissioner to implement it. Later, BJP came to power in the MCD. The Mayor must now get this implemented through the Commissioner. But it’s clear he doesn’t want these employees to be made permanent.”
Ankush Narang said, “During AAP’s tenure, BJP only played a negative role in the MCD. They never let meetings happen and didn’t let the House function. It is in the hands of the Opposition whether the House runs or not. Even in the BJP’s MCD, AAP ensured the House ran. But today, when we raised the demand for regularising 12,000 employees, the Mayor adjourned the session. We demand that the BJP-led MCD regularise these 12,000 employees—they must be made permanent.”
