Biography
Atishi is one of the most prominent leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and a key member of the party’s Political Affairs Committee. She currently serves as the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Delhi Legislative Assembly, representing the Kalkaji Assembly Constituency in South Delhi.
An academician and policy expert by background, Atishi holds a Bachelor’s degree in History from St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi, where she graduated at the top of her class. She later earned postgraduate degrees in Education and History from the University of Oxford, where she was awarded both the Rhodes Scholarship and the Radhakrishnan-Chevening Scholarship.
Before stepping into active politics, Atishi spent seven years in a village in Madhya Pradesh working on organic farming and progressive education systems. She joined AAP in 2013 and played a critical role in shaping the party’s policies and governance agenda.
From July 2015 to April 2018, Atishi served as Advisor to the then Education Minister, Manish Sisodia, where she was instrumental in:
Transforming Delhi’s government school infrastructure
Establishing School Management Committees (SMCs) under the Right to Education Act
Regulating private school fee hikes
Introducing the internationally recognized Happiness Curriculum in schools
In 2022, she represented India at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, showcasing Delhi’s model of urban governance.
Atishi is widely admired for her policy expertise, political acumen, and calm, reasoned presence in public debates. As Leader of Opposition, she continues to be a vocal advocate for education reforms, transparency, and inclusive governance, embodying the values of clean and progressive politics.
