Biography
Atishi, one of the most prominent members of the Aam Aadmi Party and a valued member of the party’s Political Affairs Committee, currently serves as a Cabinet Minister in the Arvind Kejriwal-led Government of NCT of Delhi. She currently holds thirteen major portfolios in – Education, Higher Education, Technical Training and Education (TTE), Public Works Department (PWD), Power, Revenue, Planning, Finance, Services, Vigilance, Water, Public Relations, and Law, Justice, and Legislative Affairs. Additionally, she is also the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Kalkaji Assembly Constituency, in south Delhi.
Atishi received her Bachelor’s degree in History from St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi, where she ranked 1st in her batch. She also holds postgraduate degrees in Education and History from the University of Oxford, where she was awarded the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship and Radhakrishnan-Chevening Scholarship.
Atishi is a dedicated activist who chose the challenging path of politics to bring about lasting change. She spent seven years in a small village in Madhya Pradesh, engaging in organic farming and progressive education systems. She joined AAP in 2013 and played a crucial role in shaping the party’s policies. She was the advisor to Education Minister Manish Sisodia from July 2015 to April 2018, wherein she played a key role in improving the infrastructure of Delhi government schools, forming School Management Committees (SMCs) under the Right to Education Act, strengthening regulations to restrain private schools from hiking fees arbitrarily, and introducing the Happiness Curriculum.
In 2022, she addressed the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, highlighting Delhi as a global model for urban governance.
Atishi’s unwavering dedication to societal welfare, particularly in the field of education, showcases her passion for mass politics and policy expertise. She is admired for her composed demeanor during television debates and her political acumen and humor. She is a popular and dynamic leader, a fresh breath of air in Indian politics.
