Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Delhi State President Saurabh Bharadwaj strongly objected to the Delhi Legislative Assembly’s notice summoning the Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) to appear before its Privilege Committee. Questioning the authority of the BJP-led Delhi Assembly to call a serving Punjab DGP, he called out the BJP of blatant double standards.
On Saturday, AAP Delhi state President Saurabh Bharadwaj pointed out that the same party had earlier refused to allow Delhi Police to appear before the Privilege Committee during the AAP government, arguing that the Assembly lacked the power to summon them. It is deeply unfortunate, he said, that after systematically weakening institutions, the BJP now selectively invokes the authority of Assembly committees.
AAP Delhi State President Saurabh Bharadwaj said, “The AAP governed Delhi for 10 years. In matters of privilege, the BJP’s LG never allowed even a constable of the Delhi Police to appear before a committee of the Delhi Assembly.” He said that MLAs used to question the Delhi Police about issues such as drugs being sold in their constituencies, murders taking place, and prostitution occurring.
“Those questions would go unanswered, with the Delhi Police stating that the Assembly did not have the authority to question the police. The same BJP is now saying that the Punjab DGP should report to them and come here to explain,” he continued.
The AAP Delhi State Chief further said that the BJP has completely dismantled these institutions. “Now the BJP hopes to use those very institutions to summon the Punjab DGP,” he said, adding that the BJP’s central government and the Lieutenant Governor should first examine their own conduct.
On X, Saurabh Bharadwaj said that the BJP now remembers the Privilege Committee. “The same BJP government and its LG never presented even a Delhi Police constable before the Privilege Committee, nor did they ever answer questions in the Assembly regarding law and order. Yet the BJP is now saying that the DGP of Punjab Police should appear before their Privilege Committee,” he stated
