After a six-year-old girl drowned in seven feet of rainwater in Mundka’s Ward 33, Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House, Ankush Narang, visited Rama Vihar on Sunday and met the grieving family. Holding the BJP-led Delhi government and MCD responsible for the tragedy, he said that while Chief Minister Rekha Gupta claims there is no waterlogging in Delhi, Rama Vihar has been submerged for months. He demanded ₹1 crore compensation for the child’s family and the immediate closure of the illegal dumping yard in the area.
Senior AAP leader and LoP in MCD House Ankush Narang stated, “The situation in Rama Vihar, which falls under Ward 33 of Mundka Assembly, is extremely poor. Around seven feet of stagnant water has accumulated there, in which a six-year-old Class 2 student recently drowned to death. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta claims there is no waterlogging anywhere in Delhi, but in Mundka, rainwater has been standing for months. This tragic incident occurred because of the failure of the BJP-led Delhi government and MCD.”
Highlighting the issue of waste dumping, Ankush Narang elaborated, “Earlier, it was said that Delhi had three garbage mountains, but the BJP is now creating a fourth one in Rama Vihar. Garbage, silt, and debris are being dumped here, causing soil and water pollution. On one hand, the BJP claims it is removing garbage mounds, while on the other, it is building new ones. This is a complete failure of both the Delhi government and the MCD.”
Questioning the accountability for the tragedy, he asked, “Who is responsible for the death of the six-year-old girl — Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, BJP Minister Parvesh Verma, or Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh? Hundreds of plots in Rama Vihar are filled with seven feet of water, turning them into death traps. The family of the deceased child must be compensated, and the illegal dumping yard in Rama Vihar must be shut down immediately as it is causing soil pollution and spreading diseases.”
Expanding on the issue, Ankush Narang added, “It is not just Mundka; similar situations exist in Majlis Park, Nirankari Ground, Kadipur, and Burari, where new garbage mountains are being created. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi talks about the ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’, and the Chief Minister and Mayor boast of cleanliness drives, the ground reality is that Mundka is buried under garbage and seven feet of stagnant water.”
Meanwhile, AAP’s MCD co-incharge Praveen Kumar said, “Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and BJP ministers claim to be removing garbage mountains, but in reality, waste from Bhalswa and Burari is being shifted to Rama Vihar. This is leading to soil pollution and spreading diseases. The BJP is literally building a death well. We demand that the family of the deceased child be compensated, the dumping yard be shut down, and the condition of Rama Vihar be immediately improved.”
Condemning the BJP’s governance, AAP leader Preeti Dogra said, “The BJP has turned Delhi from the city of hearts into the city of garbage. People perform religious rituals in the polluted water of the Yamuna and return home with diseases. The BJP is responsible for the deplorable condition of Rama Vihar, where filth, mosquitoes, and diseases like dengue and malaria are rampant. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh must visit Rama Vihar, compensate the child’s family, and act immediately to improve the situation.”
