Just minutes of rain turned the capital into a swamp, exposing the BJP government’s grand claims as nothing but PR gimmicks. While Delhiites waded through flooded streets, the CM, PWD Minister, and Mayor were nowhere to be seen. Leader of Opposition (LoP) in MCD House Ankush Narang launched a blistering attack, demanding accountability and action—not photo ops.
Addressing a press conference, Leader of Opposition (LoP) in MCD House, Ankush Narang, stated, “Before monsoon, CM Rekha Gupta had claimed full preparations were in place and citizens wouldn’t face any problems. PWD Minister Parvesh Verma had identified over 400 waterlogging points and assigned officers to each, promising immediate suspension if water accumulated.”
“MCD Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh had declared that Delhiites would enjoy the monsoon this year. In the very first Standing Committee meeting, BJP said MCD would also appoint nodal officers to prevent waterlogging and ensure drain cleaning, just like the Delhi Government,” he added.
Displaying photographs of flooded PWD roads, Ankush Narang said, “Waterlogging was reported in CM Rekha Gupta’s own constituency Shalimar Bagh, and in Dhaula Kuan even after rains stopped. BJP MLA’s constituency Sangam Vihar was flooded. In Najafgarh and Mustafabad, a child was seen sailing a toy boat on the water-clogged streets. Flooding was reported from Naraina Village, Shahdara, Kashmere Gate, and across Delhi. In Sarita Vihar, a BJP hoarding proudly credits the party, but even that area was under water.”
Questioning the credibility of BJP’s claims, the MCD House LoP added, “PWD reports say 82% of drains were cleaned by 30 June. MCD’s official report claims 100% drain cleaning is done and is ongoing year-round. Reports for both large and small drains were submitted. If 100% of MCD’s and 82% of PWD’s work is done, why is Delhi still drowning? Did BJP take any real steps to prevent waterlogging? The Delhi Government deployed 443 officers to tackle it—has anyone been suspended? Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh promised Delhiites a joyful monsoon. Were he, the CM, or BJP ministers even present on the streets when the city was choking?”
Slamming BJP’s governance model, Ankush Narang said, “BJP came to power with big promises but gave Delhiites nothing but betrayal. They claimed people wouldn’t suffer this time, but even mild rain brought the capital to a halt. Citizens were stuck for 5–6 hours, unable to move. BJP should stop hiding behind photo ops and get to work.”
“LG, CM, Mayor, and Ministers are busy posing beside drains—it would be better if they got those drains cleaned. MCD drains must be cleared so that people don’t suffer. BJP must align its words with action and deliver on its duty. The people of Delhi will not tolerate another season of waterlogged misery,” he concluded.
