More than 250 lives were lost when an Air India aircraft crashed just seconds after takeoff in Ahmedabad on June 12, sending shockwaves across the country. As the nation continues to mourn, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)’s senior leader and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Delhi Assembly, Atishi, arrived in Ahmedabad on Friday to meet the injured survivors and grieving families at the city’s Civil Hospital. Marking the party’s deep respect for the victims, AAP had earlier suspended all campaign activities in Visavadar and Kadi for two days following the tragedy.
Expressing her deep sorrow and solidarity with the families affected by the horrific incident, senior AAP leader and former Delhi CM Atishi said, “The Air India plane crash was a deeply shocking and heart-wrenching tragedy. A total of 241 people on board lost their lives. In addition, several medical students and local residents also died where the plane crashed, and many others have been critically injured. We are here today to offer our condolences to all those affected.”
She further stated that the Aam Aadmi Party mobilised local leaders and volunteers immediately after the incident to support rescue and relief operations. “When this accident occurred, we instructed AAP’s local leaders and volunteers to stand ready to help the administration and the government in any way necessary. Every AAP worker has been on the ground, ready to assist,” Atishi said.
She also expressed condolences to the family of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who tragically lost his life in the crash. “We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family of Vijay Rupani. His loss in this plane crash is deeply saddening, and our thoughts are with his loved ones,” she said.
Atishi confirmed that she would be visiting the trauma centre shortly to meet with those injured in the crash. “We will now proceed to the trauma centre and meet the injured individuals receiving treatment there,” she stated.
On the matter of the investigation, Atishi refrained from making any premature remarks, noting, “We will not comment on the investigation process at this time. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has constituted a committee to probe the incident, and we should await its report before drawing conclusions.”
Atishi took to ‘X’ and wrote: “Came to Ahmedabad today. Met the people injured in the Air India plane crash. My heart was shaken after hearing about the entire incident from the doctors of the Civil Hospital. My salute to all the first-responders – doctors, administration, fire service, local residents. It is a very virtuous act to come forward to help people in such a difficult situation. All the local leaders and workers of Aam Aadmi Party are present to provide all possible help to the administration, families and the hospital.”
The Aam Aadmi Party stands in solidarity with the people of Gujarat during this moment of collective grief and pledges continued support to all relief efforts.
