The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) filed nominations on Friday for the posts of Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of the MCD Standing Committee. The party has nominated Councillor Praveen Kumar Rajput from Ward 105 as the candidate for the post of Chairperson of the Standing Committee, while Councillor Mohini Jeenwal from Ward 218 has been fielded as the candidate for the post of Vice-Chairperson. Both candidates have filed their nominations and are putting in their full effort to win the election.
On this special occasion, senior AAP leader and MCD co-incharge Praveen Kumar, Chandni Chowk MLA Punardeep Sawhney, Deoli MLA Prem Chauhan, and Standing Committee members Rafia Mahir and Aamil Malik were present.
Leader of Opposition (LoP) in MCD House, Ankush Narang, said, “The party will contest the elections for the posts of Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson of the Standing Committee with full strength. We will not give the BJP a free hand in this election. Our candidates are in a strong position to give a tough fight to the BJP. We hope that the election results will come in favour of the Aam Aadmi Party.”
Newly appointed Standing Committee member in MCD, Satya Sharma, disrupted the BJP’s internal equation for the post of Standing Committee Chairperson. There is ongoing infighting within the BJP over the Chairperson post. Recently, the BJP nominated Sunder Singh—who had just joined from the Aam Aadmi Party—for the post of Vice-Chairperson of the Standing Committee, sidelining its own senior councillors and workers. In contrast, the Aam Aadmi Party has given priority to its long-time councillors and workers.
On Friday, at the MCD headquarters in the Civic Centre, in the office of the Corporation Secretary, Praveen Kumar Rajput from Ward 105 West Zone filed his nomination for the post of Standing Committee Chairperson from the Aam Aadmi Party, and Mohini Jeenwal from Ward 218 Shahdara North Zone filed her nomination for the post of Vice-Chairperson. The election will be held on 12 June and the results will also be declared on the same day.
There are 18 members in the Standing Committee—one each from 12 zones and 6 elected from the Corporation House. The nominations for the posts of Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson are made from among these 18 Standing Committee members, and all 18 members cast their votes for electing the Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson.
