With defeat looming in the Delhi Assembly elections, BJP’s goondaism continues. On Saturday, BJP goons misbehaved with and assaulted Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers in the Chelmsford jhuggi, located in the New Delhi Assembly constituency. Senior AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh condemned the incident, calling it shameful that such an attack took place in broad daylight, just 100 metres from Parliament. AAP workers had gone there to campaign with due permission, yet they were stopped and assaulted.
Senior AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh stated, “It is deeply regrettable that right next to the temple of democracy—the Parliament—just 100 meters away, there is this slum. Our karyakartas had come here to campaign. Our leaders and fellow workers were present, but goons from the BJP arrived, assaulted them, misbehaved with them, and tried to stop them from campaigning, despite the fact that they had proper permission to do so.”
He added, “I was supposed to be part of this door-to-door campaign. When I arrived, I saw Delhi Police officers standing there while BJP goons were relentlessly shouting slogans. I approached the officers, but the sloganeering continued without any action being taken. This is absolute lawlessness, and the Election Commission has turned this election into a joke. This is happening just 100 meters from Parliament, yet the Delhi Police remains silent.”
Sanjay Singh said that if Delhi police cannot ensure security in the New Delhi Assembly constituency and are allowing goondaism to take place, it raises serious questions about the Election Commission. Police officers there told our worker that the SHO had ordered no action to be taken, which clearly indicates that the police are enabling goondaism in Delhi. Under BJP’s instructions, Delhi Police is orchestrating such acts during the elections—an extremely unfortunate situation.
He concluded by saying, “I demand that the Election Commission immediately suspend those incompetent police officers and take strict action against them, as all of this happened in their presence. The police arrived half an hour later, making it evident that a major incident could take place during the Delhi elections. This is all happening in collusion.”
AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh writes to Election Commission after BJP workers attack AAP volunteers in New Delhi
I would like to file a complaint regarding an incident through this letter. The complaint is as follows:
Today, on February 1, 2025, at approximately 1:00 PM, an incident took place at Chelmsford Jhuggi, which falls under the New Delhi Assembly constituency and is located merely 100 meters from the Parliament House. Goons associated with Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma, wearing BJP scarves and caps, attacked our party workers Gaurav Singh, Suresh Acharya, and Pranali Rawat. They also misbehaved with Pranali Rawat, a female worker.
Our workers repeatedly pleaded for police assistance, but the police sided with the BJP goons. During this altercation, a TV channel’s camera was also broken. The police personnel present at the scene stated that the SHO had instructed them not to take action against any worker of Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma. With such an incompetent SHO in charge, any untoward incident can take place in the area. Therefore, this SHO must be suspended immediately.
The incident occurred just 100 meters from the Parliament, openly violating the Election Commission’s rules, yet no action has been taken.
Upon receiving information about the assault, I reached the location, where BJP goons continued sloganeering in front of me. I lodged a complaint with both the police and election officials, but no action was taken.
Hence, I urge you to take immediate cognizance of this incident and suspend the SHO of Parliament Street Police Station. Failure to do so will result in a blatant violation of Election Commission rules, exposing the hollowness of the Election Commission’s claim of conducting free and fair elections.
