Tikri Border to Nangloi Metro Station road to be redeveloped; connectivity between Delhi-Haryana Border & Ring Road to get bolstered: CM Atishi

  • October 7, 2024

The Delhi Government has sanctioned Rs. 183 crores to overhaul the New Rohtak Road. Aiming to eliminate waterlogging and traffic congestion, the project will benefit lakhs of commuters and residents around the Delhi-Haryana Border. The project was announced on Monday by Chief Minister Atishi in presence of Former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal. The project includes repair and restrengthening of the road between Nangloi Metro Station and Tikri Border and 9 km of new drains on both sides of the road. The project was approved during a recent Expenditure Finance Committee meeting.

Announcing the project, CM Atishi said, “The New Rohtak Road, which runs from Nangloi Metro Station through Mundka to Tikri Border, is perhaps the most dilapidated road in Delhi today. This is due to the rapid population growth, reducing the capacity of the drains along the road.”

CM Atishi highlighted that this year’s monsoon saw almost double the usual rainfall, leading to further strain on infrastructure. To tackle this, a new drain is being constructed by the PWD along New New Rohtak Road, this will span from Nangloi Metro Station to Tikri Border. This will be done in two parts: one portion will go from Nangloi Metro Station to Hirankudna Drain, and the other part will come from Tikri Border to the Hirankudna Drain.

“This is a long solution which will prevent waterlogging and road damage in the future. The Delhi government has sanctioned Rs. 183 crore for this project, and work on the drain will start within four weeks, along with repairs to New Rohtak Road,” she added.

CM Atishi emphasized the government’s commitment to resuming development work under the guidance of Arvind Kejriwal. “Arvind Kejriwal is now out of jail, and under his guidance, all stalled work in Delhi is being completed by the Delhi government, and it will continue to be done in the future,” she affirmed.

Residents of Nangloi, Mundka, Ghevra and Tikri to benefit from construction of new drains

Under this project, the width and depth of the drains will be increased as per the present needs of the population. The project has been designed in such a way that it will control the flow of rainwater and will also prevent damage to the roads due to waterlogging.

After improving the drainage system, dozens of colonies in Nangloi, Mundka, Ghevra and Tikri area will benefit. Also, those traveling on New Rohtak Road connecting Delhi-Haryana will also get relief from traffic.

New Rohtak Road will also be strengthened to alleviate traffic congestion

The road between Tikri Border and Nangloi Metro Station is an important stretch on New Rohtak Road and further on this road also meets the Ring Road. Lakhs of vehicles pass through here every day. Right now the road has become dilapidated due to waterlogging, due to which the commuters have to face long traffic jams.

To solve this problem, CM Atishi has also approved the project to strengthen this road. Under which the road will be strengthened through recarpeting-black topping by removing the obstructions present on the road so that people get relief from traffic problems. Also, the footpath will be redesigned and repaired wherever necessary on the entire stretch so that pedestrians can get convenience.

Project Supervision Committee to be set up to ensure timely completion

CM Atishi has also directed the officials to form a ‘Project Supervision Committee’ regarding the project. The committee will monitor the progress of the project and ensure that the work is completed on time.

Project Overview

The Public Works Department (PWD) has proposed improvements to the storm water drainage system along New Rohtak Road (NH-10) from Kirari Suleman Drain near Nangloi Metro Station to Hiran Kudna Drain, and from Tikri Border to Hiran Kudna Drain, with an estimated cost of ₹183.81 Cr.

The PWD maintains the existing storm water drain along New Rohtak Road (NH-10). However, the current system has become outdated and inadequate due to increased development and urbanization, including residential, semi-commercial, and industrial growth along both sides of the road. This growth has overloaded the drainage system, causing obstructions and damage.

The ineffectiveness of the drainage system has led to frequent overflows, damaging both service roads and the main road. This has resulted in traffic congestion, discomfort to commuters, and air pollution from dust.

This comprehensive drainage improvement plan is expected to resolve the long-standing drainage issues along New Rohtak Road, enhancing road conditions and traffic flow. Under the project the existing internal width of the drain ranging from 1mtr to 1.5mtr will be increased to 1.2mtr to 3mtr as per need.
