The Aam Aadmii Party Mahila Morcha, the women’s wing of the party, on Wednesday demonstrated at the samadhi (memorial) of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, at Rajghat, demanding justice for the Kolkata rape and murder victim and the incidents of rape and atrocities on women across the country.
A doctor was raped and murdered on August 9 in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is probing the matter. The Supreme Court on August 18 took suo motu cognisance of the rape and murder of the postgraduate trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
The AAP women wing paid tribute to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, and protested, demanding justice in the heinous incident in Kolkata and the atrocities and rape incidents happening on women throughout the country.
AAP Delhi State Mahila Morcha president Sarika Chaudhary, MLA Preeti Singh Tomar, MLA Dhanwanti, along with many women councillors and workers were present in the protest. During this, the women’s wing raised slogans like ‘India will not tolerate atrocities on women’, ‘Hang the murderer, give justice to the daughter of the country’.
Talking to the media, AAP Delhi State Mahila Morcha president and Daryaganj Councillor Sarika Chaudhary stated, “We are really saddened that such painful incidents are increasing every day, be it Kolkata, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh or Bihar, or any other part of the country. Every day, we read news of rape cases, even small girls are being raped. The central government should make strict laws on this. Those who commit such heinous crimes against children should be given severe punishment, and it should be settled as soon as possible in fast-track courts.”
“The Central Government should make the strictest law in this matter. There should be immediate action in cases like rape but unfortunately this does not happen. So, first, there should be strict laws, and the number of police personnel should also be increased so that the safety of women and children can be ensured properly. Our demand is that the criminal should be given death penalty within 6 months, no matter which state of the country he is from,” she asserted.
Sarika Chaudhary further said the CBI should investigate the matter properly as the facts in the case are not clear yet. We demand that the culprits involved in the case must be sentenced to death, she added.
MLA Preeti Singh Tomar stated, “I urge the Central Government with folded hands that a strict law should be made as soon as possible for the protection of doctors and not only made but also implemented. Today, after 12 years, after the Nirbhaya murder case, such a horrific incident has come to light again. The only difference is that this time a doctor became the victim, that too inside the hospital.”
The MLA said, “Look at the courage of such brutes who carried out such an incident. Today the question is not about how many incidents are happening, many such incidents are not even reported. These are only those incidents which came to light, those which did not come are not even counted,”
Preeti Tomar continued, “What is the reason for this? The reason for this is the extreme delay in getting justice. It takes decades to get justice. In that time, many more incidents happen. Then how will one be afraid? Criminals get released on bail. When the victims go to the police station, they refuse to even file a case, or such incidents are suppressed by using intimidation. Today, people are scared for their family’s women, their mothers, daughters, and sisters.”
She further stated that at this time it is necessary that all the political parties forget their political animosities and unite and take strong action against such heinous crimes, politics can happen later too. Unfortunately, everyone is focusing on how to benefit from the situation. Nothing will happen merely by making laws, laws are already there but they are not being implemented. The High Court and the Supreme Court will also have to take cognizance of such matters and ensure that justice is given as early as possible in such incidents.
