Senior AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh on Monday said, the Supreme Court’s decision upholding the Delhi Lieutenant Governor’s right to appoint 10 aldermen to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi was unfortunate and against the spirit of democracy.
On January 4, 2023, LG nominated 10 aldermen. The decision was challenged by the AAP government in the top court on the ground that the nominations were made without the aid and advice of the council of ministers.
“By bypassing an elected government, all the rights are being given to the LG so that he can run Delhi with his diktat. This is not right for democracy and the Constitution of India. Therefore, I respectfully disagree with this decision of the Supreme Court. This is unfortunate and against the spirit of democracy,” said the AAP Rajya Sabha MP.
Sanjay Singh said this decision is completely opposite to the comments made by the Chief Justice and other judges in the court during the hearing.
Last year, the Supreme Court had said giving the LG the power to nominate aldermen to the MCD would mean he could destabilise the elected municipal body.
Sanjay Singh said in other states also, the governor approves the names, but he does so on the recommendation of the government. “In other states as well, there are nominated members and councillors, but the elected government sends their names and then the governor approves them. Why is this not the case in Delhi? Is there no elected government here? This decision is against the people of Delhi and the spirit of democracy,” he said.
As for the future course of action on the issue, Sanjay Singh said after going through the full decision of the court, we will make further strategy.
He said AAP will win the upcoming standing committee elections.
PM Modi now wants to give Waqf Board’s land to his friends: Sanjay Singh
On the law related to the Waqf Board’s property by the Central Government, Sanjay Singh said that first we have to see what things the BJP government at the Centre is going to bring in this law. They want to seize everyone’s property in this country and give it to their friends. They captured the army’s land in Ayodhya and gave it to their friend Adani. Now do they want to capture the Waqf Board’s land and give it to their friends? Modi ji gave port, airport, railway, sales everything to his friend. They want to give the whole of India to one man. Now there must have been a deal to sell the Waqf’s property at a very low price. That’s why they are bringing this law. Modi ji should tell how many electoral bonds he has taken.
BJP wants to eliminate Dalit leadership in Parliament and Vidhan Sabhas through creamy Layer: Sanjay Singh
On creamy layer, Sanjay Singh said that Dalits and Adivasis have been given the right to reservation under Article 341 and 342 of the Constitution. The basis of reservation in Article 341 is purely caste discrimination, not economic. How does the question of creamy layer arise in this? In this way, if an MP of the BJP or any other party becomes an MP from a reserved seat for SC, he will come under creamy layer, after which he cannot contest elections from that seat again. In this way, the BJP wants to eliminate the leadership of Dalits and Adivasis from Parliament and Vidhan Sabhas. The leadership of any leader does not emerge in one go. But according to this definition, they will go into the creamy layer and then will not be able to contest elections from that seat again. Therefore, this question is arising in the minds of Chirag Paswan and all the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe leaders of the BJP because they will not be able to contest elections from their seat again.
