Transport Minister says Cabinet to approve students passes in DTC AC buses very soon

·         AISA/CYSS DUSU panel meets Mr Gahlot

Delhi Transport Minister Mr Kailash Gahlot on Saturday said the decision of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC)  Board allowing students passes in its air-conditioned buses will be very soon placed before the cabinet for its approval.

Mr Gahlot made the announcement after meeting the joint panel of AISA-CYSS for the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections.

“It is a matter of happiness that the DTC Board, of which now I am the chairman, has for the first time accepted the long standing demand of the DU students that their students passes should be allowed in DTC AC buses, I am extremely hopeful that this will now be placed before the cabinet at the earliest,” Mr Gahlot said.

He was addressing the media after meeting DUSU presidential candidate Abhigyan (Number 1), Vice-presidential candidate Anshika (1), Secretary candidate Chandramani Dev (2) and joint secretary candidate Sunny Tanwar (5).

Mr Gahlot himself a law graduate from the Delhi University said he was fully aware that the students require efficient and cost effective modes of public transport, and he is fully committed on this issue.

Mr Gahlot said Metro fare hike was an unnecessary and completely unjustified financial burden on the students and it is unfortunate that the BJP’s central government imposed this burden on the people of Delhi, particularly students without any valid reason.

“Metro is the most convenient, safe and professional mode of public transport, particularly for students, given the fact that students travel long distances in Delhi to reach their colleges and University campsuses. It is beyond any reasonable understanding as to why the BJP’s Central government behaved in this manner last year,” Mr Gahlot said.

The transport minister said what was further unreasonable was that the Central government chose to ignore the stand and protest of the Delhi government, which opposed the Metro fare hike tooth and nail, despite Delhi government being a 50 % partner in this project.

Mr Gahlot also said he was trying to resolve the issue of shortage of U-special buses for students and assured the DUSU panel of a quick solution in the coming days.
