Advisor to Deputy Chief Minister, Delhi
Member, Fundraising Team, AAP
Nisha Singh is a leader of the Aam Aadmi Party and Advisor to Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia. She is leading the charge of designing and implementing reforms in the ICDS (Integrated Child Development Service) Scheme of the Women and Child Development (WCD) Department of Delhi Government. Currently a member of the party’s Fundraising team, she has also been a Spokesperson of AAP in the past.
Nisha was a senior executive at Google India until 2009 and left her job to enter into social activism and politics. Nisha was elected as a Councillor in the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) in 2011 as an Independent. As a Councillor, she was at the forefront of the battle for systemic reforms in the MCG and is the lead petitioner in a PIL demanding decentralization of governance of Gurgaon by devolving all executive and financial powers to the elected representatives of MCG.
During her stint as a Councillor, she took on the Haryana government over the illegal demolition of a slum cluster without compensation or rehabilitation, in her constituency. As a violent scuffle broke out between the police and the residents, Nisha began to record the police’s harsh actions. Upset by this, the police detained, assaulted and harassed her for hours, seriously injuring her in the process. Instead of being compensated for her ordeal, she was slapped with charges of attempt to murder and rioting. Unintimidated by state persecution, Nisha continues to fight for justice in the courts.
In an interview, she said,
This was an attempt to intimidate me. [But] I will continue to raise my voice against corruption. We seem to have forgotten that the power and responsibility to revive our institutions lies with us. We will have to demand to raise the level of governance in India.
After completing her term as a Councillor, Nisha joined the Office of the Deputy Chief Minister as an Advisor, in July 2016. She has since been working to transform Delhi’s Aanganwadi network and upgrade Delhi’s early childhood development framework.
Nisha is an engineer and has done her MBA in Finance from the prestigious London Business School.
