Chief Minister of Delhi Sh. Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday felicitated Sh. Avnil Kumar for winning medal at the Asian Para Games 2018 in Vishwas Nagar on Wednesday.

 

The event was in continuation of felicitation of the players who have made Delhi proud in different international tournaments. The Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister had been felicitating them at their respective place of residence

Sh. Avnil Kumar won Bronze medal in the recently concluded 3rd Asian Para Games-2018 held in Jakarta (Indonesia) held from 6th to 13th October, 2018. He won Bronze medal in the 400 Mtrs Run event at the tournament.

 

The Arvind Kejriwal led Delhi Government recently revised the amount of cash incentive to the sportspersons for their achievements in the (i) Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (ii) Asian Games and Para Asian Games (iii) Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Games for Para Athletes and their coaches.

The idea of visiting the respective areas of stay of the sportspersons to felicitate them was generated as a mark of respect for these players who make not only Delhi but also the country proud. Earlier, such events were held in the closed areas like Secretariat and the players used to visit the Secretariat. Reversing the norm, the Chief Minister and other stakeholders of the government now go to the areas of residence of the players and felicitate them in the presence of local residents.

Delhi government has been working for overall development of sports and sporting facilities in Delhi. Apart from working on the infrastructure development for sports, huge increase in the prize money for the sportspersons, it has also launched schemes for continued support for sportspersons and budding talents.

The Delhi government has introduced a scheme, “Mission Excellence”, to support 100 top-level sportspersons, per annum, for receiving training and coaching to prepare them to compete in International tournaments and championships and achieve sporting Excellence. They will be provided a financial support of maximum Rs. 16.00 lakhs per annum.

The second scheme, “Play & Progress”, is meant to support school students of two age categories i.e. Under 14 and Under 17 to encourage them in excelling in the field of sports and prepare them to compete in international tournaments; National championships; National Games and achieve excellence in sports. They will be provided a financial assistance of up to Rs. 2.00 lakhs and Rs. 3.00 lakhs per annum for their needs.
