Water Minister Shri Kailash Gahlot today approved the proposal for laying of 700 mm diameter Rising Main from Irrigation & Flood Control (I&FC) Pond Sonia Vihar to 7 MGD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) under construction at Sonia Vihar.

Commenting on this, Water Minister Shri Kailash Gahlot said “This decision will go a long way in improving the quality of life of the people of Delhi by ensuring a cleaner Yamuna River. It will also contribute towards the conservation of aquatic life and the environment. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi government is committed to ensuring a sustainable future for the city, and this decision is a step in the right direction.”

The work of construction of 7 MGD STP at Sonia Vihar is in progress and is likely to be completed in September 2023. The estimate for laying of the sewer line in the Sonia Vihar Group of colonies (GOC) is under the tender stage and it is expected that the laying of the sewer line work will be completed within 15 months after the award of the work. Hence, to operationalize the STP till sewer line laying work is completed, a proposal has been prepared to trap the untreated water from the I&FC pond to Sonia Vihar STP for reducing pollution of Yamuna River.

After detailed discussions, Water Minister Shri Kailash approved the plan in view of the priority of the Delhi Government to clean the Yamuna River. The estimate for Rs.3.5 crores was presented before the Minister who, while approving the proposal, also reviewed the progress on Sonia Vihar STP which is under construction and is expected to be completed by the third quarter of this year.
